    Hi everyone!

I have just been offered a job in Glanmire.. Im thinking it would be best to live in the city centre or on the ring roads or somewhere. I am not familiar with Cork at all so could anyone tell me areas/housing estates that would be suitable and handy for me to commute to Glanmire to each day.

I definatly dont want to share with students, so I would prefer an area that isnt packed with students but more so professionals! (Nothing wrong with students at all, Iv been there and done that is all)..

Any advice or suggestions would be helpful!

Rochestown, Douglas, Blackrock/Skehard Rd., Ballinlough ... all very accessible to South Ring with easy commute to Glanmire.

Good luck in the new job.

all the above would be good areas. plus if your going to be socialising a bit in cork they are handy for heading out in town or douglas (esp when getting taxis)
best of luck with the new job

I used to work near Glanmire and was living in Douglas, easy enough to get to with the link roads, good luck with the new job:)

Would the traffic be bad on those ring roads?? I suppose heading out of the city would be easier than coming into the city..

Also is Douglas close enough to town to get taxis for going out etc, or is it walking distance?

taxi to town but douglas is grand for going for a few. have a number of pubs and resturants all close enough to eachother

Wilton would be ideal.eagle valley has a few nice places, and very accessible and close to everything really.just 30 seconds from south link

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭rose23

Yeah there seems to be alot of places available in Wilton.. I guessing then Wilton and Douglas are my best bet to be close to town, and have an easy enough commute each day to Glanmire!

I found it ok for traffic because was going against it, used to leave home by 7.50 every morning and would be at school for 8.05! There's loads of good pubs in Douglas and 2 shopping centres so it's handy. Taxis aren't too expensive from town to Douglas either:)

one thing i would say about eagle valley tho is is that it is pretty much 'rent land', loads of cars.but the convenience of its location probably overshadows anything else, theres a bus stop right outside the estate too which is handy. the city is just a stones throw away and the jack lynch tunnel is around a 6 minute drive.

Douglas is a really nice place to live, cool bars and close to the city, NO students!! If you get a place in the Frankfield or Grange area of Douglas you'r very close to the link which will take you to Glanmire.

but with wilton, you may get caught in a few months time with the road works on the sarsfield rd roundabout. id go for douglas

You're better off living on the side of the river you're working on to avoid the inevitable bottle necks which happen at the bridges and tunnel.

Where would you suggest then on the Glanmire side..but close to the city also??

If you're teaching in GCC, don't live in glanmire! The amount of stories i've heard of teachers been harassed by students because they lived close to the school is ridiculous!

It all depends what your budget is! Rathcooney has some nice house's, its close enough to glanmire too
Doughlas, town or wilton then would be ideal because of the good transport systems in place!

EDIT: Try looking into Little Island, montenotte or mayfeild if you want something close to town/glanmire

Thanks for the advice Steba..oh I would never live in the same town I was teaching in.. its nice to leave work in the evenings and not have the worry about bumping into students everywhere.. Il check those places out alright thanks

i would suggest douglas aswell, there are plenty of bars/restaurants, cinema, 2 shopping centres, i may be biased because i live there:) but it has nearly everything you need,
it should be an easy enough drive to work, you would be heading the opposite direction to most of the traffic,

edit: it also has kc`s chipper!!

Carrigtwohill is nice like someone said above, plus I lived there for years and never knew anyone from there who went to school in Glanmire. Castle Lake and Ard nua? Ard something anyways, are nice estates with loads of empty houses

  • Registered Users Posts: 937 ✭✭✭newbee22

I second Bladebrews suggestion of Douglas for KCs alone!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭rose23

Carrigtwohill is on the far side of Glanmire whereas I want somewhere close to town also.. I think its going to be around the Douglas area so.. there seems to be some nice houses available in Franfield.. is this in the Douglas area too??

Montenotte/Silversprings region. They are served by public transport too.

Kind of yeah. The Number 6 bus runs from town thru douglas and up to Frankfield.

Douglas is adjacent to Grange which is adjacent to Frankfield

Douglas is very nice...has a few good pubs and two shopping centres. Not too far from the city centre either.

Douglas is a great area to live, very convenient 24hr Tesco also has Dunnes, M&S, great pubs and restaurants etc.. Can be slightly more expensive than other areas but worth it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,015 ✭✭✭Ludo

As someone else said in another thread... Douglas is full. Go somewhere else :-)
The Tesco isn't 24 hours is it? Thought it closed at midnight.
