R.I.P. Blue Bridge

Alas, the famous Blue Bridge in Portlaoise by the shopping centre was begun to be dismantled last night! It is going to be strange not having it there, I remember as a child begging to be brought up to it just so we could run up and down it and look down at the passing cars.

Does anyone know why exactly they have decided to take it down? I have been living in Galway for the last few years and so am a bit out of the loop!

It was a pointless dirty eyesore! It was there so long people became strangely attached to it, but in fairness, it will open up what has become the middle of Portlaoise now that Main Street has died and all the shopping centres have pulled the focus of the town past James Fintan Lalor Ave.

Yea, it kinda didn't serve any purpose as everybody just crosses at the light s anyhow. Steel is prob worth a few bob these days as well.

There was'nt that much steel in it to justify paying all the workers wages and machinery hire costs not to mention €300 per hour for both Kavanaghs cranes on site for nearly 24 hours....and the permit costs to Laois Co Co to close the road.

I think it was more of a landmark than anything else, if I was asking someone for directions to a place in Portlaoise I would always use the blue bridge as a guide.

The bridge was property of Hardcourt developments (they own the shopping centre) so more than likely they had to pay the council a fee.

Why would the council have to pay themselves?

Doesn't make sense in this age of scrimping & saving to pay to take it down when leaving it there wouldn't cost a cent.............................


then again, I don't suppose it has to make sense.

Anyone interested in having a session to celebrate commiserate it's demise. We can charge it to County Hall.

I live in portarlington, have all my life, remember crossing the bridge as a child, was over in portlaoise a few times the last few weeks and would of drove under it if it was still there, but i didnt even notice it was gone...
