If only there was some other free way for two people in seperate places to stay in touch ... we could call it digital posting or something.

I need Facebook to communicate with my two real friends and the 168 people I hardly know! I'm devastated.

Why would you add 168 people you don't know?

Anyone that actually believes this even as a possibility is extremely ignorant about the internet.

They could not even ddos facebook for a few minutes, facebook is designed to handle millions of requests per second/per minute anyway. Doing it to something like a government website that has almost no traffic is totally different.
They aren't DDOSing it most likely they've found vulnerabilities in their website and will target them on 5th November unless Facebook have patched them by that date.

You do realize that "Anonymous" is just a name given to anyone posting on 4chan by default, right? Anyone can call themselves a part of "Anonymous", it's a joke. The "credible" group calling themselves Anonymous who did orchestrate ddos attacks before did have a website, but this isn't even there at all. It's basically a couple of bored teens inventing this out of thin air, I can't believe I'm even talking about it.

You need a god to take Facebook out of your life? Don't open the website, simple really.

While I admire the simplicity of your answer, it's nowhere near that easy. Facebook is shoved down everyones throat on a daily basis in advertisements so regardless of participation or interaction, it pervades everywhere.

What's really annoying is that every product, every IP has to have it's own page. Seriously, why the FUUUUUUUU- do Tampax Tampons have their own Facebook page? Why? Why would anyone want to be friends with a tampon? If I wanted to mix with stuck up cnuts I'd hang out on the southside.

    Good luck!
Hacktivist group Anonymous, which has been responsible for cyber-attacks on the Pentagon, News Corp, and others, has vowed to destroy Facebook on November 5th (which should ring a bell).
Citing privacy concerns and the difficulty involved in deleting a Facebook account, Anonymous hopes to "kill Facebook," the "medium of communication [we] all so dearly adore."
This isn't the first time Anonymous has spoken out against social networks.
After Google removed Anonymous' Gmail and Google+ accounts, Anonymous pledged to create its own social network, called AnonPlus.
The full text of the announcement, made on YouTube and reported by Village Voice, is below:
    Operation Facebook

    DATE: November 5, 2011.

    TARGET: https://facebook.com

    Press:
    Twitter : https://twitter.com/OP_Facebook
    http://piratepad.net/YCPcpwrl09
    Irc.Anonops.Li #OpFaceBook
    Message:

    Attention citizens of the world,

We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy.

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. http://www.physorg.com/news170614271.htmlhttp://itgrunts.com/2010/10/07/facebook-steals-numbers-and-data-from-your-iph....

You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.

The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.

Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.

Never gonna happen. Anonymous is just a bunch of kids with nothing better to do, much like most of the people on Facebook. They'll probably just end up logging into all their own Facebook accounts and getting distracted on the day they're supposed to be bringing the 'evil empire' to the ground.

Dont care. Want it to happen. If what they are saying IS true (which if it is legitimate from Anonymous then it probably is) then I would rather my info wiped, than to have it stored on some server for my future bosses to have a gawk at.

Why not? You realise that Facebook can only gain access to the information that you put into it, right? I don't understand the privacy issue people have with it. Don't put information you don't want them to know on the phucking website it's pretty simple.

Also I don't understand why people constantly whinge about Facebook on here. If you don't like it then don't use it. I know you may have to deal with the huge burden of occasionally hearing someone reference Facebook but such are the perils of life.

Unfortunately - whether we like it or not - majority of people is totally clueless in this matter and they believe that if they set their profile to "Private" - it is private. Bullsh1t, because it is not... The constant whinging MAY open anther few minds who MAY review their activity on social networks or withdraw completely.

Because the purpose of Internet forums is to express opinions. If you don't like reading them, what stops you from applying the above solution?

The profile is private to other people, not Facebook. If they withdraw completely the information they inputted is still there.

"As I stated before, I've never had and never will have a Facebook account."
That's not an opinion. I like reading opinions, and hence use boards and other forums, but saying that you never had a Facebook account and never will have one in a thread about Facebook is just retarded. But hey man, it's cool to go against the creed of the man. Myself, I used to use Facebook years ago man, like in Harvard before it got too mainstream.

Facebook is extremely good at what it does. Allows you to keep in touch with people at home and abroad even without talking to them due to status updates and picture uploads. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it. If you think there are privacy issues then don't put up what you don't want or, like you, don't use it. I don't see what the constant Facebook bashing does for anyone and comes across as a pathetic attempt to be cool by going against the norm.

Well first off it sounds like complete rubbish, but in general...

Slaves??? I never felt I was 'enslaved' to join facebook...you sign up on your own free will and put whatever you want on it. And how useful is people's information on fb anyway? I doubt anyone needs to see all the unfocused and disorganised information on fb, such as 500 pictures of me and my friends on holidays, on nights out, whatever, unless you're a stalker. Surely my browsing history, google searches, cookies, etc. is much more interesting to whoever scrutinises people's internet usage, vs. analysing 99.999% of facebook which is mostly useless information about hangovers, breakups, pictures of cats, succinct descriptions of recent nights out, blah blah blah. Surely you can be stalked anywhere on the internet in general and people get plenty of information from your use on search engines, twitter, email, online stores, vs. facebook. IMO I really don't care if the government knows whether I was off my face last weekend or not.

Besides, isn't it a bit ironic that it's a 'battle for choice' according to the letter, when they're supposedly getting rid of your option to use FB? People really overthink social network sites TBH.

I don't get it either. Facebook and Twitter and other such social networking sites serve a great purpose in certain situations. People on here moan about them as if they're the worst thing ever, but they've changed the face of communication. Things like the Spanish protests, the Egyptian protests, what's been happening in London (regardless of what you think of that) and other uprisings like those in Syria and Libya have a lot to do with modern social networking and some have been organised through social networking sites. It allows people to get together and organise things. Things like Facebook and Twitter give people in certain parts of the world that may be more oppressed than we are a slight insight into how other parts of the world are living. There's a reason China doesn't want its people using these sites - it gives people a voice and it lets people see how badly they're getting f*cked over (for example, Chinese people suddenly seeing Europeans saying whatever the hell they like on Twitter might make them realise how badly they're getting done). It's the only medium that cannot be censored. Yes, there are annoying people, but such is life. There are annoying people in every aspect of life, but just because they're there it doesn't mean you have to pay attention to them. Social networking certainly has its merits and has contributed a lot in its short time, and anyone who says otherwise is either in denial or has been living under a rock.

Cut off the head and two more will take it's place (sorry just after seeing Captain America). I'm pretty sure my point is that we'll end up using Google+ for the mean time (shudders).

For all those who are distraught by this news you can download a local copy of your data in Account Settings. There's a tiny link down the bottom to "Download a copy of your Facebook data". Just to warn you though you don't get the photos you've been tagged in as someone else uploaded them.

Good thing you didn't bother. The last thing we need is another policitical "expert" who's watched a few segments on CNN and RTE news and said: "gosh, that awful bad man President Assad in Syria, won't the high and mighty honorable US army come in and give peace and democracy to the land".

faceTube is great for a while but it becomes so annoying..also when your work 'mates' and aunties etc join it becomes impossible to really communicate with your friends. My mate had his facebook hacked a while ago..he turned green when he realized that photos of family and friends could have copied and now could be floating in cyberspace ripe for some nefarious photo- shopping!
Hey its there makes alot of people happy..not for me but I would not like to see it destroyed maliciously...its akin to cyber-rioting....it will eventually run out steam when something better come along.
