Just found a price difference between two take-away's in towns within 18 miles of each other :

    New Ross :
    1. Philly Steak wrap = € 5.50
    2. Chargrill Chicken wrap = € 5.50
    3. Large Chips = €2.30
    Graignamanagh :
    1. Philly Steak wrap € 3.50
    2. Chargrill Chicken wrap = € 3.50
    3. Large Chips = € 2.10
And the large chips for €2.10 had nearly twice the amount of chips

Surely they are not the same product, just products with the same name?

different prices from different takeaways in different towns with different populations and probably using different ingredients....

    OP, what's your point?

The wraps look the same , taste the same , are the same size , .

Difference is that one wrap 2 euro cheaper than the other .

If readers here are slow to see my point , I apologise .

This happens everywhere. Same products in supermarkets, difference prices. Same menus at McDonalds, different prices from one restaurant to another. Same apartments in the same building, different prices.

The rent of the take aways might be different, their turnover, etc...

they may taste the same and look the same but they are in 2 completely different towns.

Would you expect to pay the same in Dublin as you would in Wicklow? Different rent, different wages, different competition and even different suppliers can all make a difference.

For all we know the prices in New Ross could be the standard and Graignamanagh have lowered their prices because they aren't getting much business.

    Graignamagh's Population: 1545
    New Ross' Population: 7709

the takeaway in Graignamanagh will need a higher % of the town's population to buy from them to remain profitable, and have priced themselves accordingly.

Penney's in Waterford sell a t-shirt for €3.00 and the very same t-shirt is also €3.00 in Penney's Carlow .

Aldi prices in Waterford are also the same prices in New Ross :

    Waterford population = 49,213
    New Ross population = 7,000

Is there special concessions to take-away's to use population stats before pricing a menu ?

no .. but you can probably assume the take-away owner does not have a chain of take-aways scattered all over the country and it sole consideration is how he can make a business work in the actual town he is in and not a town 20 miles away.

Comparing a chipper to the likes of Penny's or Aldi just shows your complete lack of understanding of this matter.

Penney's and Aldi are nationawide companies that centralize their HR and staff management. So wages would be the same across the shops. Also, their rents are absorbed in a high level budget, so that one shop might have a higher rent than another without affecting the prices to the consumer. A take away chain might only have a few shops, the scale of company management is different to Aldi's or Penney's

A bag of chips in Waterford population = 49,213 is €2.00

A bag of chips in New Ross population = 7,000 is € 2.00

Does this satisfy the posters above ?

If someone somewhere else doing the same job as you is paid €200 less per week than you, would you be happy enough to take a pay cut?, same job same pay?. This is an open market, if one shop wants to charge X and another Y for the same product, so be it, this is not a communist state where prices are set for the good of the commune. Surely you can understand that different businesses in different places have different costs. For those who understand, no explanation necessary, for those who do not, no explanation possible.
