Dublin Slang - Shifting/Lifting

Hi, I'm from "down the country", where we use the term shifting to connote kissing, cuddling etc. (especially in a nightlife situation).

Recently I heard some Dubliners saying something about "lifting". Does lifting mean the same thing as shifting in Dublin? Or were they talking about something else?

I know the term "to be lifted" means to be arrested but I haven't heard of "lifting" before.

Shifting used to be fairly common in Dublin too. But maybe it's what the young 'uns are calling it.

I wouldn't know: I'm too old.

lifting is stealing afaik, what context did you hear it in

My missus who is younger than me, work with people who are younger than her and she laughed at me using the term "shifting" she says the term is "meeting".

Lifting is shop lifting I would say.

I always thought of "shift" as a country word.

When I was growing up it was "meet" or just "get off with".

"heyore yunfella, will ye meet me mate"

Then there's "with" and "with with", the first for kissing, the second for riding.

"Ah jaysis, Paul was with Pauline last night"
"With, or with with"
"Ah just with"

Yeah, definitely didn't hear the word 'shift' till I went to Mayo on my holidays. It was "get off with", "be with", "meet" in Dublin.

Then when I went to college I got confused with 'score'.

I thought meeting was kissing and shifting was sex... shifting is more of a country thing though, but I had some neighbours as a kid who were culchies :P

"Lifting" is short for "lifting somebody out of it" and usually implies a stern-talking to...you'd get "lifted out of it" for coming home late and drunk for example!

None of these explanations would explain the context I heard the word lifting being used in. I must ask the person the next time I bump into him. He was a friend of a friend so might be a while.

Perhaps he just misspoke, or was drunk or something. Perhaps it is a solecism unique to him.
