Unbelievable to think the average is only €6267!!

The average figure has been going up and up since the poll started. It's just €500 shy of my running costs now. The likes of this delights me knowing that I'm no worse off than someone driving a 05/06 1.4 car while I'm running an older 3.5 V8! :)

€6000 is a decent lash of cash.

I agree - I think the depreciation is what's pushing the figures up.....

Unfortunately it's a good bit shy of my running costs!

Interestingly (or not :pac: ) if I had a ZT diesel instead of the petrol one I have I'd knock €2000 off my annual costs, €400 ish in road tax and €1600 ish in fuel, I reckon maintenance costs and depreciation would be much of a muchness.

Of course it is but that's the joy of it! If you buy a new car for say €40k you're gonna loose the guts of €10k in depreciation alone in year one. If you keep that car for only one year it's going to cost you €15k.

    That's the reality of it.

There seems to be a lack of consistency in how depreciation and opportunity cost are being calculated. If I were to state depreciation based on this year only it would be maybe 200 or less. Whereas if I calculate it for the period I've owned the car it's 2700 calculated as follows: Bought new in 2003, paid 24,500. Now worth ~1500. 23000/8.5 = 2700.

I notice that galwaytt states the depreciation on his 1993 Porsche 968 as 1500 whereas other posters with much newer and more mundane cars are stating theirs as less than that. This doesn't make much sense and may be due to differences in how costs are being calculated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

There is always going to be a margin of error with depreciation.

Galwaytt obviously didn't buy his car in 1993, why is it hard to believe his depreciation is €1500?

Also, lots of people drive ordinary, mundane cars. These cars depreciate little compared to what most larger engined cars would. And any larger engined cars on this board tend to be older cars like my own, which are at the end of their depreciation lives as it were.

Point is that even if you allowed a 50% margin of error with the final figures, they're still no where near the AAs figures.

If its a 1.3 it should be €310, or €333 if its just over 1.3l (which I think it is)

I would have thought the depreciation at the moment is around €0 for a 968, surely the price has stabilised. I'm presuming he has it a few years and its the average over that time.

There are two main differences to the AA.

    1. They have annual parking charges of €4015 which is nonsense. Take that off the €11,800 and your nearer our figures.

    2. They have it calculated that at 8 years and/or 128,000km any car is worth €0. So an E60 with 128tkm is worth nothing..

Where our figures are slightly off is that they calculate a cars mileage at 16,000 km per annum. In our figures there are many who do well over that. In fact if we calculated all our mileage at 16tkm p.a our figures would be even lower.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Very true.

But what also differs is the amount of miles people are doing with different levels of consumption. IE, I only do about 8000 miles a year yet my fuel costs are the same, if not higher than someone doing 12000 miles in a high MPG diesel. It all balances out somewhat. :)

I reckon a diesel one, bought right might even break even on depreciation over a couple of years. Word is spreading on them fairly fast.

Run 2 cars 10k miles between them average of 27mpg say.
Petrol 2500k pa between the 2

    Car 1 VW Golf 1.4 2003 bought new -
    Depreciation-500
    Fuel 1250
    Tax 350
    Insurance 500
    Interest cost- nearly zero now
    Tolls 75
    Parking 25
    Total 2700

    Car 2 Audi TT 225 Roadster 02
    Depreciation 600
    Fuel 1250
    Tax 550
    Insurance 550
    Interest cost 200
    Tolls 75
    Parking 25
    Total 3250

    Servicing/Tyres 500 pa for both
Overall total about 6.5k for the two. Very cheap motoring , I see no real need to spend 50% more for a new focus or golf on its own.

new battery a few hundred quid
    new alternator 700-800
4 new brake discs and pads twice 2500
battery cables a few hundred each

You've put 10 tyres on in the last year?? Do you track it or something?

A steering rack for €5,000? Wow, go up the north next time!

I got a new steering rack and two suspension arms, a new alloy etc... for my last BMW for £1,400 from a main BMW dealer in Northern Ireland. The quote I got from one of the main BMW dealers in Dublin was something like €3,500!

Is it possible that some unscrupulous BMW dealer may have seen you coming?

No I tried to get a second hand rack first that didn't work out so I ended up getting a new one direct from ZF In germany and those prices are from an Indy a main dealer is way more, I priced the north it was exactly the same , I have bought parts up there for old car and saved a good bit but
It was over €130,000 day one ( I'm not the original owner) so parts are priced to suit :-( you cant compare to parts prices for a 3 or 5 series it's soooooo much more
Don't track it the steering rack caused a prob with the traction control so I burned the Tyres anytime I came near the accelerator and I have put up 27000 miles since I got it , and an accident destroyed some of the tyres

I averaged the depreciation and interest over the 5 years of the loan. I know it's more this year but that should be the average by the time it's 5 years old. Also no idea about the servicing costs. Due it's first service this month which is about 150-200 I think.
