Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Threaded crank problem

Went to put pedals on my bike tonight and the right pedal won't bite the first part of the thread. I managed to get it to screw in from the rear of the crank, but this doesn't go as far as the first thread.

So far I've tried cleaning it, gently turning it, forcefully turning it (not too hard), and changing the angle. I used the left pedal to see if it would work at all (in case it was the pedal itself) but no luck.

What are my options here? I've been off the bike a bit, and would like to vet it sorted quickly, but at the same time I don't have much money to throw at it. Can it be retapped without the need for a helicoil?

Might sound stupid but isn't one of the pedals reverse threaded( can't remember which one ) ?

Yes, you're right, but I'm definitely using the right pedal on the right side. Thanks :)

It should be easy to see which thread is damaged or not? Your turning it anti-clockwise right?

Yep. I'll just bring it to bike shop today.

The right hand pedal screws in clockwise!

Not sure if this will help but I had difficulty getting a crank of my daughter's bike recently.
    Google provided the solution:)
I poured boiling water over the crank where it attaches to the bottom bracket and a few gentle taps with a hammer and it came off no problem. I hope this helps

    Two things:

    1) The right pedal screws in clockwise.( not as neilboard says)

    2) The left pedal will not screw into the right crank, because it has
    reverse thread.

My bad. Should have said the crank turns anti-clockwise when tightening!

    A slow moment for me.

Major WTF moment! After a few more tries I gave up and removed the crank to bring it to shop. Once it was off I decided to give it another go and it went straight on? Ah well, sorted now. Thanks all.
