    Hey Guys,

I setup a small script to display ones public IP Address and ISP (http://www.ifconfig.biz).

What's the best way to get the word out there without spending a fortune?

    Cheers,

    S.

Firstly for functionality and other ideas look at the competition:

    http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/
    http://whatismyipaddress.com/

You need more content like that for SEO juice too.
Then get your site out these via social media and a link in your sig.

Hey thanks for the tip tricky D!

I dislike both of those sites as they're full of adverts. I like the simplicity of http://www.whatismyip.org/ - It's just an IP Address :)

I thought about facebook adverts for http://www.ifconfig.biz but they seem kinda pricey for a free tool! :)

Create a WordPress plugin? Site owners who feel inclined would install it and it would post the ip and provider of everyone who posted, everytime someone posts you get free publicity.

Not sure why anyone would want such a plugin, but by the sheer weight of numbers of WordPress installations around the planet you could be sure hundreds would install it.

Sounds interesting Cormee - Forgive me but I'm not overly familiar with the plugin do you know of any examples I could check out?

You're not the #morgue Cormee by the way are you?

Sweet lord - yes, how many years ago was that? IOL, let alone irc.iol.ie, don't even seem to exist anymore. Who are/were you?

Hah! No way.. Small Internet eh! Would've been about 13/14 years ago when I started using IRC? I was Scorpion and I started #TheSlum to rival #Morgue on IOL hehe! Soon after everyone moved to irc.phishy.net - Some people from Morgue are still there in #phishtank haha!

And of course, the old page is still alive (dead!): http://www.iol.ie/~featurel/morgue.html

I remember your nick alright, never visited #theslum though. ;)

I reckon that's one of the first websites I ever did...and the modified date is 21 November 1997 17:05:31! 14 years ago!

Glad to see I wasn't using table to lay out pages back then either.

What you up to nowadays? You still hanging out on IRC? Does anyone use IRC anymore! :D

You could try asking industry sites for a link.

irc.iol.ie - that certainly brings back some memories. :) There was even an IOLUG mailing list at one stage.

I've added a small info bubble which shows how many times your ISP has been looked up in the database :)

Well i dont know where the site is going without adds.. It seems ure trying to provide a service for free, but the competition will beat u everytime because they are getting revenue, which is more than likely having seo services on this.

The idea is fantastic good job, and it works. But with your competitors gaining revenue i dont see how u can get up the serps with the current design, as said above u have very littel content for google to even see what your site does, is, and how and where is should be targeted..

    For free traffic i suggest:

Writing a few articles on some of the article submission directories sites..

    ezinearticles
    squidoo
    ehow
    article base
hubpages ... these are all pr6 and above ..

Start there .. couple of 500 word decent articles should drive decent traffic after a while, make sure and ping em also and get em indexed.

Good advice - I'll check those directory sites out. It'd be great if I did actually start to make money off it but would like it not to be hugely tacky like most 'Show your IP Address' sites out there. Something discreet would definitely be an idea though! :)

I was thinking of adding a background to it, but keeping the format the same. A dynamic background that will expand to accomodate the longer ISP strings..

Hmm ok .. well i agree with the cheeseball adds.. i would liven it up do with something..

Suggestion of a similar add that points http://hidemyass.com/ or perhaps even a proxy service might be right up your street on that site ??

Anyway.. best of luck with the venture.. :D

Have made some slight changes! Site is now http://www.ipconfig.ie and contains a text box which will select the IP Address with single click :D

Two slight typos - both your sig and the popup showing how many times the provider has been checked still refer to ifconfig, you should probably change them to ipconfig
