Its quite pathetic really because it makes playing call of duty online impossible. I constantly have 1 bar of connection until after 12. I currently have up to 1mb with eircom and the price is very high for what i have to put up with. What should I do? And if i choose to switch provider who should i switch to?

My friend who lives less than a mile up the road is on the same package with eircom but his connection is consistent no matter what time of day.

For most of the day the connection is faultless, its just really poor between these times.

dont you mean 12am (midnight) :D

if its only happening during these hours my guess would be contention (other people using the net at the same time as you)

if this is the case i'm afraid there is very little you can do but
switching to a non phone line provider as the other phone line broadband providers are just reselling eircom.

you friend may be on a different exchange with less people on it.

it could be something else though noise on you line etc..

did you ring eircom about it?

Are you using a wireless connection or ethernet?

If your mate up the road is on the same exchange and is getting consistent speeds then it doesn't sound like contention.

If you are using wireless could you check your speeds in the evening with ethernet?

yea but i always use 24 hr time so im not that familiar. but is either great or its absolute s***e never in between as if maybe it was kinda busy.

I believe he is on a different exchange as he could get broadband before i could. it only came in in 2009.

How do you mean noise on the line?

i haven't rang yet. as i work almost everyday while there help offices are open.

and they'll probably just tell me what you have.

is there many other wireless signals around that you can pick up
if so it could be wireless interference (other people using the same wireless channel as you)

did you try changing this in you routers settings.

normally you type this into you address bar 192.168.1.1
then enter a password (some routers have none)

some you only have to enter admin and nothing for a password
some you have to enter admin and "pass" or "password" as the password.
(they might be written under you router these are not the same ones you use to connect to the wireless)

then once you have access look in the menu bar for "wireless"
then you will see channel with a dorp down box next to it click on the box and change the number it dosent matter which.

the login detail may not work though
whats the make and model of you router.

if you know someone whos good at computers it would be best to ask them but you can try it yourself if you want

ok then enter 192.168.1.254 this will bring you to the routers page.

you will see wireless on the left side click on it

then down at the end of the page you will see Advanced Configuration Options click on this more option will appear.

look for default channel this should be at 7 by default
click on the drop down box change the number to one far away from 7
    for example 1,2,11.

then click on save changes at the very bottom of the page.

since you dont know much about this becareful not to change any other setting.

i will be online for another 10-15min if you need more help

i dont know what the restart connection wiil do.

changing the wireless channel will change the frequency that the wireless connection is on.

and hopefully it has moved to a clean freq that no one else is using

    its most likely contention then
ring eircom as there nothing you can do about it

It maybe contention but the op should confirm that if at all possible by connecting directly to the router and seeing what the speed is then.

It is virtually certain that Eircom will ask him to do this if he contacts them.

Also have you attempted to ask any of your neighbours if they are experiencing the same speed problems in the evening?

They will most likely try to fob you off that is why it is important to know exactly what your problem is and if your neighbours are experiencing the same problems at the same time.

cant find an ethernet cable just now.

I know several neighbours with the exact same problem

jesus those posts weren't showing the other times I visited the thread before.

Just tested speed with wifi on www.speedtest.net (the one Eircom recommends) and my results were:

    89ms ping

    0.91 Mbps download speed

    0.10 Mbps upload speed.

I consider this speed to be fantastic and if I could get this speed all the time I'd be more than happy.

Will test again tomorrow at 10pm

well thats good so - make sure and tell them that when you call and dont let them fob you off. However if it is contention it is unlikely that there will be an instant answer as it usually involves adding extra capacity at the exchange before there is an improvement.

You could also try posting in the Talk to Eircom forum.
