Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Saw these pics linked off a friend's Facebook page.

    Levitating Japanese Girl

    Article Here

If they're real, I'd love to know what camera/settings she used to take these. Also, I don't see a remote in her hand(s), so it's either timed well, or someone else is taking them..

    What do you think?

(PS - the sites are safe)

    Fast shutter speed???
And maybe some strobe or ISO to fill in the gaps???

    Is this a trick question?

Haha, no, not a trick question. I figured a super fast shutter speed as there's no blurring at all, but I figured the lighting (particularly indoors) might be tricky at such speeds.. just curious, cos I know if I tried it, it'd look rubbish!

Yeah, I really don't get the question here. Its clearly high speed shooting done very well, and I suspect a great deal of very fine Photoshop work.

even the article says she takes pics till she gets one she's happy with .

simple technique - self timer on the camera to 10 seconds, count them down in your head and get yourself into position.....if not happy with resulting pic....go again !

shutter speeds may not be high - all depends on the movement going on around her and her own movement (a light jump...which can be done slow enough)

Fair enough. That's pretty much what I was looking for, just an explanation at how it's done. Thanks.

If I can touch them, they are real.
And yes, I am talking about photographs as physical objects I can turn around, hang on the wall or tear into pieces.

ive wanted to do a levitation for ages, heres one i did last weekend for alocal paranormal group.

id go back and tweak it a bit, try and add some more shadow underneath maybe. but theyre happy with what i did. :)

There is some motion blur in her right leg in the shot where she is hoovering.

  • Registered Users Posts: 301 ✭✭the_tractor

Me thinks stobe involved - see the shadow on the wall in the 4th photo.
I'd also say someone else was taking the shots.

But they are cool shots, hopefully not all photoshop.

Must be hard to time it for "on the way up", otherwise hair and skirts would be wrong, that's what I'm most impressed with.

it could be partially practice. There must be a knack to getting these things right that would save alot of time compared to some one doing it for the first time. hopefullly it is not really good photoshop.

another way to make it look good is to never show the ones that didn't work. :D

    Its a mad collection

How to take "Today's Levitation" (how I actually do) [2011/03/31]

    - Equipments and shutter speed
Camera body: Canon EOS 5D Mk2
Lenses: Canon EF50mm F1.2L USM, EF24-70mm F2.8L USM, PENTAX 67 lenses (with adaptors)
Tripods: Gitzo's rapid-pole 3 steps with ball heads (from 1980s)
Shutter speed: 1/500 sec. or faster (1/320 sec. can be used in a darker condition)

    - With a self-timer
EOS 5D Mk2 has a 10sec. timer as it's longest timer set up. This means that I can get away as far as 10 second distance from the camera after I press the shutter release button.
First, I get a composition and a focus manually.
Then I press the shutter release, run to the right position for a levitation as checking the camera's blinking red LED counts down 10 seconds and jump by my intuition.
In this manner, I need to jump over and over to get the right shot.

    - Ask someone to press the shutter release button
When I take my levitation farther away from the camera than 10 second distance, I ask someone (mostly my friend) to press the shutter release button. First, I ask my friend to be a stand-in in a proper position to get a composition and a focus.
Then I go to the position to levitate, and my friend come to the camera (we switch our position) to press a shutter release button in time with my jumps.

    Very clever, great photos. ;)

I'd say the biggest part of it is her expression and body language. Most people look like they're jumping when they're jumping...oddly enough. She is careful to strike a pose that a person would normally never have midair.

I gave this a quick bash a few weeks ago. Fast shutter speed and lots of light are all you need to do a quick and easy one. Not a patch on the OP's one, but a decent attempt, I reckon.

I looked at the first few photos and wasn't that blown away, I thought it looked like she was jumping, not floating.
But then I looked at some more, then a few more again and now I'm happily convinced that the girl can actually fly.
