Dog found - black and white spaniel(?)

We were walking our dogs this morning along the Western Distributor and were followed by a black and white dog, could be a springer spaniel mix. Male and no more than 2 or 3 years old (my guess). He was wearing a blue rope around his neck (quite tight and secured with white tape). He seems to have been tied up somewhere and must have bitten through the rope. One of his hind paws was entangled in the rope, so he was 3-legged. Another dog walker helped me free his leg. The rope around his neck was very tight and the end quite long. I was worried that he would become entangled again so took him home. My two dogs and my husband aren't too impressed :o He is in the garden now and my two are growling inside.
The dog is quite thin and filthy, but very friendly and was very good when I freed his paw, even though he was clearly in pain and he would love to come inside.
I kind of suspect that he might have been stolen and tied up somewhere. Have checked the internet for lost dogs but have found nothing so far. If you know where he might belong, please give me a shout!

He might be Micro Chipped, if you bring him to Ark Vet they can "scan" him.

Fair play to you for bringing him home, it's lovely to know that there are caring people out there.

Update: A friend called round who thinks he is actually a pedigree. Will take him to the vets first thing tomorrow morning.
He seems to have been an indoor dog at one stage. He is mostly lying on the step of the patio door. He comes when called, sits etc. He is very gentle, i.e. very gently took a treat out of my hand, very affectionate and he has definitely been socialised. Mine have been outside to meet him and while they are not enamoured things have definitely calmed down.
Can't reconcile the nature and behaviour of the dog with the state he is in.
I really hope he is microchipped and I can find the owner. I still don't think he is owned by whoever tied him up. It just doesn't add up.

If he is not chipped then you could give Madra a call as I am sure that they would take him:

    Well done :)

OP well done for being so kind. its so good to know people like you are out there to help the little guy.
I know its probably highly impractical for you to keep him but I know we adopted a little rescue dog two years ago and at first our origional dog Bert hated him but now they are so close and get along mighty!
If ya cant keep him (totally understandable) I have heard lots of good things about MADRA

This story is so sad and happy at the same time. I have no doubt he is better off with you than with whoever tied him up with some rope. I hope you keep him if you can't find the original owners :)

It'll make a great story either way.

Well done Cheshire Cat. It's great to see someone taking care of a stray dog.

It really is, and it's not the first time that Boards has had a story like this. Good for you Cheshire Cat! If you can't keep him, please see MADRA or Galway SPCA, but not the pound! Or perhaps you can foster him until you find someone suitable to take him as a pet? Speaking from experience, a stray can really grow on you!
Definitely sounds like he was a pet that was stolen. Can you take a picture and have it put online? I think Galway SPCA website offers this facility...

    Any update?

    Any update?

Nobody claimed the doggie so far :(
Myself and others scoured all the Lost Dog ads on the internet but no joy. Unless this dog has been gone for more than a year, the owner didn't bother. An ad in the Advertiser led to one call, but it was a misunderstanding. Somebody had found a similar dog in the same area and thought I had lost it.
He's a lovely fellow, boisterous but also VERY affectionate. Now clean and with a bit of weight gained he looks great, too.

Does that mean you're keeping him Cheshire Cat??!! ;)

Or are you now just trying to find a new home for him?

Either way, good on you for taking him in and looking after him, we need more people like you!!

Definitely give the dog to Madra. They will look after it and ensure it will be given to a good and loving home, unless you wish to and are able to take care of it yourself!

Post a picture on the GSPCA & MADRA facebook pages & maybe even EGAR aswell, make sure to ask permission first though.

Also report the dog lost at your local Garda station, hopefully someone might be looking for him & he might be chipped aswell.
