Hi i'm just looking on some information about after you got your doctor to refer your child, how long was it before your child got seen by a specialist? Also how long did it take for your child to be diagnosed? Our Doctor will be referring our 6yr old son this week and I just wanted a time estimate as you can imagine I just want my son to get the help he needs as soon as possible. Thanks

It depends on what that waiting list for the HSE clinic nearest to you.

I went private, cost €230. Diagnosis took 1 hour. Got appointment within a month. Excellant doctor. His name is Dr Brian Houlihan in Temple street, he is the best by far with 25years experience. It is very easy to mis-diagnose and he won't get it wrong. I had a big problem with a diagnosis by another doctor. Turned out my son is normal:D

Why is the doctor referring you and not your child's school. You may be entitled to a free NEPS assessment for him/her. We paid 650.00 for an assessment. How has this been identified? By the school or by you? How is he/she in school?

NEPS cannot diagnose ADHD, they are educational psychologists and can only refer a child on.No-one is "entitled" to a NEPS assessment, there are huge waiting lists in most schools and many children who have been waiting until they are in 6th class to be seen.

OP: omega oils can help many children with ADHD so might be worth exploring-and they won't do any harm.

I was actually trying to be helpful and have a child who went through something similar. Please don't shoot me down as if I have comitted a crime. That was my honest experience of the situation in our school. The school also had the cheek to tell us our child had ADHD and after paying 650 for an assessment it was discovered he was in the high iq range. Some schools also have an agenda of trying to hold on to resource hours and learning support so unless you are having trouble in different areas of the childs life take it with a grain of salt.

Not putting you down, just saying there is no entitlement.
