Does that mean that the Tralee/Fenit railway won't be opening as a railway line anytime soon?

It doesn't appear so but fortunately the greenway will protect the alignment of the railway in the event it becomes viable in the future. A very prudent decision by CIE and Kerry County Council.

It'd be nice if they could link this up with a route around the west of Tralee to Blennerville.

Were you expecting it to reopen? Are you expecting any disused railway lines to ever reopen?

Be thankful we can repurpose them as part of our tourism infrastructure.
The whole purpose of these greenways is to preserve quality railway alignments for future use when they become viable again.

We'll thank the greenway co-operatives when we see trains running Dungarvan-Waterford, Westport-Achill, Tralee-Fenit, Tralee-Limerick etc.

No, that's just what we tell the railway heads or they would not allow it.

They are never going to be viable again, the whole point is to repurpose them permanently as something useful instead of very long thin patches of weeds.

Trying to tell whether you're serious or not but I assure you there is no possibility of any of the proposed greenways reopening as railways, as the reasons for their closure originally are still valid, and I say that as a railway buff.

Athenry/Claremorris and Youghal/Midleton are possible re-openers no matter what anybody on Boards says. What's a railway buff, is it something to do with buffers?

Cycled from Athlone to Mullingar today, took us for ever mainly due to pit stops along the way. It seams to be a hell of alot of locals using it which is great to see. The wife wasnt happy with me but as my boring side as she said encorgaged be to stop several times to look at some of the bridges. It really is a great free public amentity and safe place to bring kids

The "whole" purpose? Really? When will Dungarvan to Waterford rail reopen? 2518?

Time to get the sarcasm detectors serviced boys. :) In fairness, Del.Monte did start it.

As is Limerick-Foynes, either in the short term for freight and the medium/long term as a commuter service given the areas it serves. It's just a pity the M20 is so close to it because the undeveloped land to the east of it would have potential.

Kerry County Council to meet with ABP next week about the South Kerry greenway (Renard-Glenbeigh)

    http://www.radiokerry.ie/councilmeet-bord-pleanala-next-week-south-kerry-greenway/

They are also in contact with landowners along the North Kerry and Fenit greenways. I'm not sure why they have any contact with landowners on the Fenit line as it's still an active railway. There are squatters along the route though.

The Stations along the Fenit line have been turned into houses so I would imagine those are the landowners they are contacting.

Won't be long now before CIE apply for permission to convert Rosslare/Gorey to one as they have just spent thousands installing new fencing, drainage and rockwalling.

The old station house in Fahan is now a very nice restaurant called The Firebox Grill.

I can't see from maps where the old line went though - it looks to me like the road is on it, which I would imagine would make construction of a Greeenway difficult.

Would it be on the osi 1911 map?

This map works well, zoom in and use street view.

That map is fantastic - thank you!

Though as I suspected, in the case of Fahan, most of the track has been built over long ago. You have to go much further "down the line" towards Burnfoot to see the remnants of the track.

Would've been a lot easier if these ex railways were held in state ownership instead of being pawned off

Of course the situation is ongoing with currently active railways not being monitored by CIE and free for enroachment.

MULLINGAR MUNICIPAL DISTRICT NEWS: Toilets and shop needed at greenway

    http://www.westmeathexaminer.ie/news/roundup/articles/2018/06/27/4158045-mullingar-municipal-district-news-toilets-and-shop-needed-at-greenway/

An interesting bit in the story....
Mr Murray said that when the entire route to Galway has been opened up, it would be a different marketing project.

He also reminded members that at the next county council meeting, the Mullingar Municipal District will be considering potential by-laws for the greenway.

In the case of the Dublin to Galway greenway, are we heading towards a situation with each councils applying their own set of bylaws, so as you cross from county to county, you will have to adhere to different requirements but all along the same route

Yes, you can see Fahan with railways on the OSI 25" here:
    http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,633450,926946,11,9

In the "preview map series" box at right you can flip between the 25" and the modern Street map:

Or an aerial view from 2005:

So is there an up-to-date list of what is complete/in-progress/not started on the Royal Canal Greenway at this stage? The website is out of date. Here's what they have as currently In Progress:

    Dublin:
    • Phase 2; Upper sheriff St. to North Strand.
    • Phase 3; North Strand to Phibsborough
    • Phase 4; Phibsborough to Ashtown.
    • Blanchardstown to Fingal/Meath Border at Confey. Work on these four sections is in the planning stage and was due to start in 2016-17, see; Royal Canal Way Part 8 (May 2016). However, in September 2016 the upgrade was put on hold. Apparently the money earmarked for these section was diverted to fund work on the Luas, see; RTE (3 Sept 2016). As of September 2017 no new progress

    Kildare and Meath:
    • Confey to east side of Maynooth Harbour; (Feb 2018). (8 Km). Work on this section is due to start in the first quarter of 2018 and should be completed mid 2018.
    • Cloncurry Bridge to Westmeath Border; (October 2017). (22 Km). Towpath is closed with work ongoing which is expected to be completed mid 2018

So are the last two projects finished? Any update on the others?
