Yes it's the same. Usually laptop mode is for preserving battery life but it's not essential. Save your money and go with Microsoft Security Essentials:

Yea, save your money.

Throw on Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware aswell.

And Web Of Trust can be good to.

All free and all work together.
