"a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" about 50 pages in and I'm struggling with it a bit.

Possibly the best book ever written ...... for different reasons that you'd imagine.

Baldacci; The Sixth Man... enough said that it diverts the mind from pain of other kinds.

Tapping into the resources of the excellent local library here..

In the Blood: God, Genes and Destiny; by Steve Jones.

It covers, simply and entertainingly, the genetic links between societies, cultures and religions around the world and on diseases & their evolution. Popular science at it's best.

James Herbert's ''The Magic Cottage''. Enjoyable but it's a bit predictable at the end. Like a scary story a teenager would invent, crossed with a superhero movie. ''The Passage'' series by Justin Cronin was similar.

"Consider Phlebas" by Iain M Banks. I have read his other books, but not his Sci-Fi. And since I'll have to wait until the last part of The Three Body Problem gets published in English, I figured I might start on this instead for now.

It's funny having just read a sci-fi book that makes every effort to be as physically realistic as possible and then hoping back into a more traditional sci-fi world with jumps through hyperspace and all that. But so far, it's a very good read, as expected :)

The Snowball - Warren Buffet and the Business of Life, by Alice Schroeder.

A good read on what makes the man tick. At over 900 pages long, it's a long term read.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

Can I mention an audiobook? I never read the Harry Potter books but I am addicted to Stephen Frys reading of them. Started in late January and I am on the forth one now.

I strongly recommend them. Stephen is excellent at narrating and giving the characters different accents.

Urrrgh! I read it recently and didn't like it at all. Turned me off all his sci-fi books. I read The Wasp Factory recently too, though and loved it, so I'll continue with his non-sci-fi.

Heart of a dog by Bulgakov.

Its weird, and I'm sure there a lot of very clever satire that's going over my head, but enjoying it so far.

Still reading 'All We Shall Know' by Donal Ryan but have started 'Carrie' by the King and it's bloody (pardon the pun) excellent.

Oh, I read Carrie in a day, I loved it! It was one of my first forays into Stephen King and it kept me on edge the whole way through.

I really love the structure of it, backwards and forwards, quoting from books written ABOUT the character of Carrie herself.

    Windfall by Jennifer E. Smith.

I'm on the fence about recommending it. I feel like it's going very very slowly and I'm not a big fan of one of the main characters.

Bryan Cranston's Autobiography. Great stuff so far.

The Idiot Brain by Dean Burnett. It's a very easy read but also very deep and interesting. It answers a lot of 'why' questions for human behaviour.

I've just finished Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. It's been a while since I've been completely engrossed in a book from start to finish like I was with this. A beautiful piece of work that was an absolute pleasure to read.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Jeffrey Deaver; The Burning Wire..

Started slowly but riveting towards the end... Just what is needed on a wet day .. will be sorry to finish it.

Having recently finished Donal Ryan's 'All We Shall Know' (ok, grim) and 'Carrie' by Stephen King (fantastic, quick read), started 'The Underground Railroad' by Colson Whitehead which is flipping fantastic so far!

Just read Ian Banks "The Business" and thought it flat and tedious.
Moved on to "Small wars permitting" by Christina Lamb, and its great so far.

Just about to get my teeth into Fatherland by Robert Harris. It's been on the shelf for 2 years and I never got around to it. Seems to be a classic.

Just finished Fatherland. A thriller set in Germany in the 60's shortly after Hitler won the war. The author researched Hitlers idea of the Europe he wanted if he was to succeed. Thankfully he didn't! Great book.
