American Psycho -I know it's a cult classic but my lasting memory was the boring continual and to me irrelevant fashion descriptions. Anyhow all down to personal tastes

Read American Psycho a couple of years ago....really found it quite disturbing, not even sure what kind of mind could dream up the stuff the main character got up to. I many ways still a good book though.

Currently reading Grapes of Wrath, really enjoying it, having read many of Stienbecks more accessable books, and on each occasion, really liked his style of writing.

Grapes of Wrath is a fantastic book. Try "The Pearl" as well if you haven't already. Heartbreaking.

Let me know how you get on with American Psycho. It's on my list too. Just as a suggestion, maybe read something funny in between or you might be traumatising yourself!

    I found American Psycho funny..

Is it? I had heard it's less funny than the film.

    Moby Dick

Started a few weeks ago and less than 50 pages in, not getting much of a chance to read at the moment. I have to say, for a book that was written 163 years ago, it's quite easy to read. Hopefully I will get round to finishing it soon.

Currently trying to decide what book to read next, it's between:

The Alchemist - Iain M Banks
    Midnight's Children - Salmon Rushdie
    Longitude - Dava Sobel
    Don Quixote - Migel Cervantes

Anyone recommend any of the above?

Number 4...Do it. you won't regret it. I've gone back and read it a few times.

    Currently reading
Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics: A History of Football Tactics Jon Wilson

    and

Call the Midwife Jen Worth (given to me by my midwife girlfriend and it's quite good better than the tv show)

    Next up will be
The ball is round by David Goldblatt
Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life by alex bellos
The House of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel A.Horowitz

    Spot the theme? :)

I loved Midnight's Children. I didn't know much about British rule in India and their independence before I read it and the story is amazing. Very.... different.

I'm reading Darkwar Saga book 2 - Raymond E Feist and not enjoying it. Loved Magician and all the books of his I'd read but hadn't realised that he'd written a few more series and wish he'd just left it. I'm reading the series just because I want to see how it turns out.

A friend recommended Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov so I'm going to start that on the side of Feist.

"Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides. Just finished "We Need to Talk About Kevin" lately too. Anyone read either of them? Dying to discuss them.

Middlesex is superb! I've read it twice, it's definitely in my 'favourites' category. I really loved the story of the Greek immigrants fleeing to America and building a new life, in addition to the main character's sory.

I bought the Marriage Plot recently as well, still to tackle. The Virgin Suicides is his only other book, I wish he'd write more!

Just started 'Brave New World'-very interesting contrast with Nineteen Eighty Four. Almost scarier in some ways. The books really complement each other-two sides of the coin so to speak. I think it's well worth reading them in succession.

I skipped those bits. The rest of it made my brain do disturbing things for a week.

It's odd how some people claim that video games will make you violent. GTA never affected me as much as American Psycho.

I'm reading Slash's autobiography at the moment.

    Axl Rose is right prick.

In fairness, I'm sure Mr. Rose is an almighty wanker but I doubt Slash's autobiography is going to be really fair and impartial. By all accounts he was no angel himself.

Its all dark humor so if you like that its funny if you dont like it the book could be horrifying.

Funnier than the film, I reckon. It is pretty harsh, though, no question.

Reading The Humbling by Phillip Roth at the moment ... picked it up cheap. Bit of a struggle, not sure why I'm still bothering with him, he's kinda massively overrated ... imho.

Just finished The Way Home by George Pelecanos, slightly blokey, bit insubstantial, but found it pretty satisfying, like everything I've ever read by him.

Just started The Acid House by Irvine Welsh. Read the first chapter on the bus and it was kind of meh but I have high hopes for it.

I enjoyed this also, read it last year, the Scottish accents can be tough, but some of the stories are excellent, sort of surreal. Trainspotting's good too.

You should read the book. I thought that Slash was more than fair with trying to see/get across Axl's point of view as well.

I'm sure anyone who was at the O2 (in 2010) for the last show would be able to validate the points that Slash tries to get across in the book (from 2007).

I've read Trainspotting and Porno so I'm used to the accents at this point. If you've read Trainspotting try Porno it's the proper sequel.

I think so. He may have more than one book that's a collection of short stories.

Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals"
    All about Abraham Lincoln's presidency.
Would strongly recommend it to any interested in the Biography/Politics/ History genre.
One of the best book I have ever read!
