Am I the only one who thinks Business was marked ridiculously hard?

I was almost sure I got at least an A2 if not an A1 but I ended up getting a B2 today.

business has very strange and changing marking scheme, you could have written perfect stuff but it wasnt what they were looking for this year.
i was actually quite surprised i got an A2 in it, i thought i had waffled everything

    All higher:
    Irish - C2
    English - A1
Maths - D1 (Paper 1 killed me here)
    French - B3

    Business - B3
    Music - B1
    LCVP - Distinction

495 overall, I need 500 for the entrance scholarship in Maynooth though (€1000!). Seriously considering trying to sqeeze 5 more points out through rechecking.
Anyone got any recommendations for it? I was thinking perhaps French and Business...

    I was worried about failing maths. Instead, I got a D1 :D.

And got about 100 points over my course...so I was quite happy :). Don't want to reveal too much but...it was over 400.

There were alot of worried people around me though. It's strange trying to comfort them. Few fails in HL maths aswell.

    But personally, I'm DELIGHTED :D:D:D

    Not to be insensitive, but isn't 6 x 90 points = 540 points?

Yeah I don't get the course which is 560 because I'm 20 points short.

Ah, sorry I get you now.

If I were you, i'd view my scripts and see if I can get something rechecked. All it takes is for two A2s to go up to A1s and you'll be there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 574 ✭✭✭kate.m

It's so crap. Worked so hard. Got 5 a1s in mocks. Didnt relax or anything but tried harder.

I'm only getting my 8th choice.

Like what are the feckin odds of getting 6a2s and not one damn a1:(

Ill appeal all of them :(

590 in total, cao's gone out the window failed irish, gutted, no UNI will even take me now here???
But my provisional unwanted UCAS offer is there :(

Thats mental, great results like this obviously mean youre extremely bright.
But why oh why did you do 10 subjects

That is not a clever thing to at all. All you had to do was drop 1 or 2 subjects go down to ordinary irish and you would be laughing today with 600 easily id imagine.

BTW theres no such thing as 800 900 1000 points. Its 600 or less. Theres pressure enough on students without adding to it yourself.

Very sorry anyway DAVEMUR1, a real victim of the system. But I imagine it wont stop you from being successful in future

I did my LC in 08 but ordered my official Leaving Cert transcript from the SEC about a week ago . It's a big coincidence that it arrived today. Still happy with the results:)

It's pretty cruel that two people getting the same points could be either delighted or disgusted with them depending on the course they wanted. Hard luck to those who didn't get what they wanted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 566 ✭✭✭irish_man

    I got 565 up 60 from last year! :D

    A1 French, Geography, Business
    A2 Physics, Biology
    B1 Maths

Very happy overall. Missed my course by 10 points last year and now it has to go up by 55 points for me to miss it which is never going to happen!! :)

That's what I hate about the points system!

A2s are 10 points lower than an A1! The differences between A2 and B1 right the way down to D3 are 5 points increments.

    This means:
    6 A1s = 600 points
6 A2s = 540 points (60 points difference!!!!!! Even if you got 89% in the 6 subjects it would still be 540 and not 600!!! No wonder a good grades can vary a lot in points. A1s are really needed for over 540...Annoying! A2s in my opinion are just as good)

    6 B1s = 510 points (30 points difference)
    6 B2s = 480 points (30 points difference) etc.

So its really annoying to get A2s! I think if you view your scripts and see which ones are closet to A1s and get them rechecked.

I think the points system should be changed to 5 point increments from A1 right down to NG grade i.e. points for grades below 40% too - People are dis attracted from doing honours maths because they know if they fail they get 0 points. If there was points for every grade a LOT people would do honours maths as there would be no risk. Projects maths has a lower fail rate though and should attract more but not as much as changing it to giving points for any grade. In fact I hate the points system. I wish we could just go back to marks and percentages. It would be a lot fairer.

And the girls in my year who wanted primary school teaching who need C3s - one got a D1 but hopefully she will get upgraded to a C3 when rechecked. But another got a D2...no hope there for getting upgraded to a C3 - And her other results were good but still she needed the C3. She'll probably just repeat Irish (for the entry requirements) next year. But teaching baby infants....why do they require Irish. It's stupid! I really think our system should be changed! It will have to change sometime. It can't stay this way. Its 21st century! And also Irish should be optional. It's a dead language and is never going to come alive again. They don't even speak it in the Gaeltacht as much as they used to. It is dying.

If I didn't have to do Irish I could have done a different subject instead like Ag Science (which I regret not doing. I did biology and geography and just looking at my younger sisters Ag Science book - its all biology and geography! Genetics, plants, soil!! The only thing I would have to learn are the animals. I could study that at home. It's not hard. But even still there is a choice in the exam so I wonder if I sat that Ag Science paper I might have done good and would have gotten a lot more points. But the school don't allow people to sit exams if they haven't been taught it by a teacher.)

They should bring in 'A3's (85-90) to replace A2s. An A1 would be 95-100. It would reduce the amount of 600 point scores, and would make an A1 a particularly genuine achievement.

That's another fair alternative solution! But I think percentages would be the fairest for every mark to count. I know examiners could vary a bit with the percentage they would give but still I think it would definitely be more roughly accurate than the current points system which is, I post again:

    6 A1s = 600 points
6 A2s = 540 points (60 points difference!!!!!! Even if you got 89% in the 6 subjects it would still be 540 and not 600!!! No wonder good grades can vary a lot in points. A1s are really needed for over 540...Annoying! A2s in my opinion are just as good)

That's been discussed here recently, and for a whole load of reasons it wouldn't be workable. Everybody would appeal every grade if they thought that they could get 1% out of it.

I'm only posting here cause my best friend is absolutely devastated and I haven't told people my results yet:o

    Pass Irish A1, rest honours:

A1s: Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Maths, French, Spanish
A2: Accounting (did it outside school so so happy)
B1: English (up from a low C in my mocks:D)

Needed five A1s so absolutely delighted:D I started shaking and dropped to the ground when I opened the envelope

i looked in the paper and only 2.7% or something like that got A1s...

Maybe the A1 (95-100%), A2 (90-94%), A3 (85-89%) would be the fairest possible then. Or at least have all grades go down in increments of 5 points and not to have 10 points difference between an A1 and A2 because there still A's. They should change it. Definitely fairer than the current system.
