was wondering will an post inform you if they are holding a package for you or would you have to enquire by ringing up your local post office/nearest county post office?

They usually do, but if you're expecting something and haven't gotten a delivery notice, do ring them.
I've had a package returned to the sender marked "Not called for" when they never dropped in the notice slip
