Does anyone know anything about the University Challenge Soc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭TrollHammaren

Hey, is there anyone on here from the Taekwon-do club? I haven't trained in three years but I'd really like to start back... Will they take a slightly unfit person who has a red-tag but probably will take a couple weeks to remember half of it? :P

I know some of the TKD lads, it shouldn't be an issue, they take beginners and all.

My friend was involved in starting that one for this year. Their first quiz night is on Monday 26th at 8pm.

Anyone interested in FUN and EUROPE and EUROPEAN FUN... it would be in your interest to join Europa.

Basically we're a European culture society - we're talking Oktoberfest, we're talking trips away, we're talking talks about European history and economics, etc.
The trips are especially fun, last year about 70 of us went to Tallinn in Estonia for 5 days over Christmas which was insane amounts of fun and really cheap (subsidised!). We're planning two trips this year: one potentially to Lisbon in November and another to Eastern Europe in 2012.

It doesn't matter if you don't study European studies or a language or anything - the auditor studies history and geography! But if you do, it's a really good way to get to know people in your class. If not, it's a really good way to get to know people in general as we're a welcoming, small, friendly society. We're having a pub crawl in the first teaching week with all of the language societies which will be a great way to mingle and drink your way into oblivion at reduced prices...

Also there's loads of things on in Freshers' week (Italian day, language speed dating, German day, etc...) Please drop by our stand and have a chat with one of us! :)

Trinity Singers showcase in the GMB tomorrow, Monday, at 1pm. A lovely musical start to Freshers Week, be there!

Cool thanks :). I trained for 4 or 5 years but gave up "temporarily" before the LC and never went back, was hoping I didn't have to start at beginner again!

No worries. My story is pretty similar to yours, but I was too injured to go back to TKD so I went to Judo instead, and discovered it was 100 times better :p

Going slightly off topic here - I'm going into second year and was wondering if it was necessary for me to go in during fresher's week to sign up to take part in a club again (badminton)? Or is it a case of still being on the mailing list etc from last year, and thus there not being a need to go and sign up?

I guess this might vary from club to club but hopefully someone can offer some general guidance!

DUCAC have to collect subscriptions for each club every year, so I'm pretty sure you'll have to go back in and sign up. I don't know how it works with Badminton, but the club might let you sign up at one of the training sessions. Best throw an email in the direction of one of the committee members.

I think they were around last year, but I think they we're fairly small/inactive. Looks like they're making a big push this year though. If they did a few race meetings like leopardstown or a bus trip out to punchestown that'd be great craic, here's hoping they keep stirring up the buzz.

I joined like over 10 clubs/societies. I'll never be able to attend all of them. I only realised that I'll never make it when it was already too late.

I think I did quite well this year... Only joined 5 societies! Now I must try and stay active in at least 1 of them :P (beat my previous best from last year)

Thought I'd wander in and join one or two. Ended up dropping €24 or something like that. Feck's sake, it's the same every year...

Off the top of my head:

    Yoga
    Meditation
    Hiking
    Climbing
    DUAMS
    JazzSoc
    Music Soc
    Neurosoc

Hi, prospective student here, and to be honest, one of the factors for picking a university for me is a good LGBT Soc. There's little to no information for UCD's, but at least the website for TCD's Q Soc is pretty informative.

I'd love to hear from someone who attends it often enough, though. How many people would you say are "regulars," and what would be the most average thing the society does?

    Thanks.

The best thing for you to do is go in tomorrow or some other time this week and talk to the person on the desk... they will have all the info you need.

I saw it there today... Quite a small stand, only 1 desk but from what I could tell they seemed like nice people.

Walk the full circle tomorrow and keep you eyes open. You'll see it.

If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend sending them an email or heading over to their website. They would, I'm sure, have no problem helping you out.

    Hi guys,

Just to let you know that the Voluntary Tuition programme really needs signups for the year. We have something on every evening of the week. We have art, sport, music clubs as well as tuition with primary and secondary kids in the Pearse Street area. It really is good fun and it comes highly recommended. If you can't find us at Freshers week or havent found us yet then send us an email to get more info or to put on our mailing list to learn more.

Without you guys we can't run the programme.

So please THINK OF THE CHILDREN :p

    Thanks.

Hi Littlell, the aim is for the coxes to be around 55kg or 120 pounds. Well we are always looking for new coxes especially coming into the new college year and with the influx of members to the club of Freshers Week. Coxes are generally a rare breed, we currently have two in the club both for the 2 more experienced crews and as I said we'll be needing more for our novice squad. Obviously if you have experience of coxing before coming to the club this will be a great advantage.

Hopefully this is of some use to you. If you've any more questions just keep them coming.

Dang, wish I had read this before final year! I was basically just that weight in 1st year too. Got lumps kicked out of me in football instead :pac:

We were beside Knit Soc and Europa today. We're usually at the corner of the first square of societies as you come in Front Arch. If you still can't find us email me on vtaccess@tcd.ie and I will give you more info. Our orientation night and recessionary Pub Crawl is on Monday!

Now what you need to do it find how much it was to join each one, add the costs up to get a total, divide by the price of a pint and weep!

    :P

That's what I did anyway after my first week when I was searching under cushions for bits of change people had left behind so I could go out with the lads to watch the game in the pub :pac:

Fair play to those who managed to join the most (or the least) amount of clubs and socs. After two years in TCD, I'm still trying to find which ones will suit me. This year, I managed to join 5 socs ( Hist, Comedy, Players, French, Hispanic Cultural Soc), and, interestingly enough, 1 club (Judo). Third time lucky that I'll get somewhat involved. ;)

A computer room I like to go to that not many people know about is the one on the top floor of the GMB. Quite a hike though! :P

    About 40-50 computers up here.
