Note how vexed our Vinny got, not once but twice, at the headline in one of the papers about 2,000 refugees doing a legger instead of being deported. I suppose the paper in question have a 'racist agenda'

Well, asylum issues are notoriously badly reported by the media who hardly draped themselves in glory by putting out stories about asylum seekers being given free apartments, cars and mobile phones in the late 90s. All of which is complete bunkum if you've ever had to deal with people who stay in the direct provision centres (pretty horrible experience by all accounts, on 19.10 a week from the government.)

Quite what does it mean that 2,000 have done 'a legger'? Voluntarily left the state? Presumed to have left, not having notified the Department of Justice? It doesn't speak for the validity of each of those cases at the time they were put in train.

As it happens I worked in one for 5 years. Funnily enough, my experience would suggest that your denials are in fact bunkum. The place where I worked was so "horrible" that we'd quite a job getting some people to leave. As regards reportage, I would agree that the media reporting that a "Romanian" for example committed a robbery when in fact they mean "Roma" but can't say it for fear of being lambasted by do - gooders (thereby insulting by association an entire race of people who are generally well behaved) is bad reportage.

Regarding the rest, I would be lying if I said it wasn't familiar to me based on my experience; I'm not sure about the free cars though. If you mean driving around with no tax or insurance with impunity, yes that was a big one. I did witness several social workers buying DVD players alright, and yes, several families were jumped to the top of the que re: housing.

Regarding the 2,000 doing a runner, well, I somehow think that anyone leaving would in fact go out of their way to inform the authorities in order to be seen to be doing the 'right thing' in order to keep their record(s) clean, don't you?

The fact is that the vast majority of asylum seekers in this country are economic migrants. It was a splurge up until around 2005, and then the economic bit got majorly corrected. If someone is genuinely fleeing persecution / possible death (which a minority are) then money isn't the issue. Having a safe roof over their heads and something to eat is. Stop denigrating the needs of this minority with such nonsense.

I can only speak for such centres in Cork and the surrounding area, but they're pretty bad. What am I denying? Reports commissioned by NGOs, interviewing asylum seekers are about as reliable as your claims from the other side, and they seem to reveal an extensive pattern of bullying (by both residents and those in charge) and poor provision of facilities.

Mental health outcomes amongst those in direct provision are far worse. Again, not saying that this was the case where you were working, but Fianna Fail was notorious for giving out the contracts for running direct provision centres to cronies that couldn't give a fig about the asylum seekers.

There would be a lot of information here on what I'm talking about.

The media in this country isn't afraid of naming minorities at all. The Mail, Star, Sun, Independent etc. at least. e.g. http://www.independent.ie/national-news/roma-double-murderer-to-be-kicked-out-of-country-2940193.html

Doing good isn't a bad mark against someone, by the way, and I hate the way that's used as an insult :/

Social workers buying DVD players with their own money or government money? Only Community Welfare Officers have access to funds for 'discretionary' payments.

And money is an issue when it's a grand total of 19.10 a week and they must fund the transport costs up to Dublin (where all the offices processing their claims are based) out of that money. They have no choice in which centre they are sent to. I don't imagine you provide clothes, toys for children or pay phone bills (nor should you have to.)

Yes, there are bogus asylum claims. However, you have to operate the system on a case by case basis. It's the only fair way not to prejudice against genuine claimants.

I used to fancy Peter Matthews rotten, I thought he had a touch of Richard Gere about him. However, when I heard him "singing" on a charity single a few weeks ago, I went straight off him :D

Peter Matthews asking Willie O'Dea what suggestions he has to deal with the economic crisis.

After 14 years of Fianna Fail getting us into this mess, I'd prefer not to hear what suggestions they have for getting us out of it.

You know, sometimes I tire of the left-wing, if only because they come across as such an overly-sincere, pious, humourless bunch. Boyd-Barrett trying to pull some Hitler parallel in the current EU set-up, based on a light-hearted Marios sketch is just ... ... god where do you begin to describe it...

the left (labour and the unions) aren't out protesting because FF already gave them everything they want - job protection, pay protection and pension protection.
