Generally the restaurant has received excellent comments from people. Unfortunately some will make disparaging comments nonetheless. - But that's Ireland for you! - Try something different and there's always someone waiting to knock you.

In fairness, I judged it on its own merits, rather than comparing to anywhere else. I was dissatisfied with the quality of the food we received, as well as the service. However, at the end of my comments, I also said that I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt once as I reckoned they had rushed into opening, as it was only their second day open when I visited.

Generally, the restaurant has received excellent comments, which means that they have likely ironed out the problems they had when I visited, and so I will visit again. I think it is a little unfair of you to say that I was disparaging, or that I was knocking something 'different', given that I at no stage said that people should avoid the place.

and the comment to say that it was as if the food was bought in Tesco wasn't unfair to the restaurant? - That's where my gripe with your post lay.

People have opened another business in Carlow (damn its needs new bsuiness) and someone gives it a classic Irish put-down without a thought in the world.

I'm not going to derail the thread by arguing with you, I went to the restaurant on its second day of business, and it was rubbish food, with rubbish service. There is no point to me pretending otherwise for the sake of it. I included positives in my review which included the part where I mentioned that I felt they had rushed into opening and I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt once. Reviews since have been positive, and I am not so stubborn as to think that a newly opened restaurant cannot sort out its own teething problems.

You cannot say that it is a 'classic irish put-down' when I have already said that I would go back, and at no stage have I said that I would avoid the place, or advised others to avoid. I am commenting on my sole experience of the place.

Considering using specialist catering suppliers is far far cheaper than tesco, why on earth would a restaurant do this?

She's a sushi specialist, she's from Hong Kong and regularly makes her own

I went in the other day for a look around.

Had planned on getting sushi, and kept forgetting to go every lunchtime.

Anyway, great deal for takeaway lunch, they give you a box (like the one your takeaway is delivered in) and you fill it for €3.50 takeaway..

Yum yum yum ... a lot of food can fit in that little plastic box..

choices were:

curry - sweet and sour chicken - rice - noodles - beef - chicken satay - tofu - more beef stuff - other stuff I can't remember..

It was all lovely and great price. The owner chatted away to me and was very helpful even offering to deliver lunch..

Next time I'll try sushi..

Sure beats a sandwich for a change!

went here last night lovely place staff are really nice my main course was lovely but i can safely say i do not like sushi.....cooked fish for me please :rolleyes:

I went for lunch and it was wonderful. For anyone wary of Japanese food, the lunch buffet was composed almost entirely of Chinese dishes: sweet & sour pork; chicken curry; chicken wings; ribs; noodles; rice; chips; sushi balls; melon and others which I ate but can't remember. The owner is very friendly - Chinese, but he also speaks Japanese and English (naturally) and you can indeed eat as much as you want for €8.99.

I think the first poster here talked about raw fish and cabbage leaves. It's nothing like that. I was also intrigued by an American woman who came in for lunch and conversed with the owner in Chinese. You don't see that every day in Carlow!

I ate there a couple of weeks after it had opened. Myself and the other diner had a large selection form the menu and found it all to be very good and fresh. STaff were very friendly. I was asking them about the restaurant etc. and mentioned some of the sushi i loved (salmon skin rolls) weren't present on the menu. Staff mentioned that they wanted to keep sushi choices fairly straightforward for time being in order to get people in the area used to the idea, but if there was somethign specific that wasn't on the menu i could always order it and they would do it up for me (where possible).

Hopefully it works out for them - love love love sushi!

Went to it there today and got some for the first time in Carlow..

Have to say, it was easily as nice as Yamamori or Yo!Sushi in Dublin.
Good value too!

Will definitely be a regular fixture

I ate Japanese food once before, at Yamamori in Dublin, and it wasn't the best. However, I don't believe trying a different cuisine once amounts to a thorough examination so I will give this place a go. The lunch deal does sound good, and if the food is good quality then I'm prepared to stick it out until I get a taste for it.

As another user suggested, the range of quality restaurants in Carlow is ridiculously low, whereas the place is overwhelmed with chippers. Not suggesting for a minute that everyone in Carlow is the same, but an awful lot of people here are frightened of anything that isn't fried with ketchup on the side, and its not a coincidence that good restaurants fare better in Kilkenny.

Tried the buffet. Its ok but not brilliant, for the same price you can have a far better meal at Ho Ting. The buffet seemed to be Chinese rather than Japanese.

So you're giving the place a thumbs down based on the buffet? Order some proper food and then give your verdict, you cant seriously expect a buffet to be absolutely amazing

The buffet at the Jasmine is AMAZING for a buffet. And the set menu for €10 is AMAZING for a set menu. Seems fair enough to judge a BUFFET against other similar things...
