I often see and hear that on the n7 in the evenings - usually around 6.30-7.00.

I've not seen it when I'm in my zed though :P

280 quid tax on that Citi Golf, too. How did they calculate it?

Co2. It's after '08 you know :) Worst case, the importer has to get it tested to get a figure.

Eh? How would you do that?
Don't they just get it from the cert of conformity or data on reg documents?

For cars manfactured after '08 co2 figures have to be provided in Ireland. It's up to the manufacturer or if not available, the importer to provide these figures.

    End of story.

Tax is calculated based on co2.

And matter of fact, other EU countries have been running tax based on co2 since the 90's. Denmark introduced co2 based motor tax on 1.1.1998. That's like 16 years ago. The figures have been available for donkeys.

The City Golf is manufactured in '09 and hence those figures are known.

If you were importing a citigolf though? When you say the importer, who do you mean?

    I thought CO2 rates were 170, 270, 390, 570 ????

Well .. if the figures aren't available in South Africa you have 2 ways of doing this: either get a certified emissions test done and provide those documents when importing ... or bite the bullet and be imported at 36%, which would be stupid, to be honest.

The UK for example requires a document of conformity from the manufacturer in the country of origin, which also should include these figures .. otherwise you have no chance on import really.

Is it even possible to get such an emissions test done in Ireland?

Be interested to find out about his. I'm looking at impoting a car from England that has cheaper VRT on the CO2. I was under the impression you can you just go to the dealer and get something printed that staes the CO2 emmisions.

Call Rosslare and check with them, what they'd accept. But if they have a figure in the system about a particular engine/model, you'll probably have to go through the complaints process after paying the VRT to get it changed.

I'll give them a ring beforehand so. Cheers. Might not be worth the hassle. About 100 euro in the difference. It's only a cheap yolk.

sdit: Actually 160 in the difference. Standard VRT is 40 less than the price of the car :(.
