Regarding the red 458 - it's a recent import but it doesn't have a ridiculously high reg number (ie. 11-D-125798) like other imports. Did the owner have to fork out an extra €1k on top of the VRT to get a normal number on the plate?

I heard he paid 80.000€ for VRT so 1.000€ more is not that much :P

Sorry for silly question, but do all cars that are imported/VRT paid get the 12XXXX number on the registration plate? Isn't that making the car more of a target for the nuanced car thief? e.g. if I import a volvo t5 r estate and want to make it look like a sleeper, that would alert an educated thief that the car has a higher spec or more powerful, than a car that would have been bought in Ireland originally?

From 2011 on you can't tell from the reg, unless you put it into the likes of motorcheck. From then on cars just got the next number available. Don't know about the thieving bit, so can't really comment.
