Who else is gonna make the tackles? Charlie Adam is hopeless at tackling.
Looks like Lucas gets left on his own a fair bit to hold the fort, having to resort to a fair bit of fouling.

Do you ever praise the team? Seriously!

Lucas imo was excellent today. Did his job perfectly.

Without his charge forward and vision to pick out Meireles,Suarez wouldn't have got his second of the season either. And yes I am a Lucas fan

Do ye think Liverpool can play with Carroll and Suarez together ?
For me Suarez has to be in the team every week

Murph if you had your way, Pacheco would be the first name on the team sheet!

Adam's a good squad player, but wouldn't make him first choice myself. Presumably he will make way for Gerrard.

Sorry, you don't know me or how I think so I don't know why you are bringing Pacheco into it.
But make your mind up first you say Adam is not good enough and now he's a good squad player.
In my book a good squad player should be a good player.

Lucas was solid again today as he nearly always is, and also whilst Adam wasn't brilliant today, he wasn't that bad and I certainly saw him tracking back and win some tackles.

I was really impressed by Enrique. I thought it was a near perfect defensive performance. He makes a genuine effort to close down those crosses and completely took Walcott out of the game.

And has got a nice bit about him going forward.

This time last year against Arsenal, we had Carragher at right back and Johnson on the left with Jovanovic. What a difference Kelly, Enrique and Downing make.

The thing I like most about midfield debates now is that Lucas is finally seen as a mainstay of the team

Its a fair point...............but i am going to play devils advocate nonetheless coz i am in a mischievous mood :D

Lucas direct competition is Jay Spearing, thats not saying anything in particular but its just to emphasise the next few points.

Charlie Adam will not, and never will be, asked to play that role Lucas plays. I think folk really need to appreciate Adam for the reasons he was brought in. Basically, to play some killer balls, to play more advanced than Lucas, to take more risks than Lucas when in possession, to take dead balls, to whip in corners.

When Adam beds in and gets to know more about the lads around him i think he will become very valuable alongside lads like Suarez and Meireles in particular (these 3 think outside the box.... metaphorically). And also, those 2 players will reciprocate that for the benefit of the team as a whole when they get to know what Adam can produce, the unexpected passes, somewhat speculative but nonetheless, passes that are not blindingly obvious and easy to defend against. There will be a period of 'getting to know you'. Alot of why Kenny was such a great player was because he knew where a ball was going to arrive and made runs accordingly, Adam/Suarez/Meireles will only get better understanding from here in that regard.

Imho, i think there should also be less 'finger waving' at Henderson. These lads are trying to find their feet. I have full confidence for example, if Lucas missed a few games, Henderson could fill in there no bother, he has played there for the u21's and Sunderland. He has 2 full seasons in the Prem behind him and it wouldnt even be a discussion for me who i would trust in there between him and Spearing. Its both unfair and unrealistic to be criticising players who have had 2 games in the shirt.

Im quite happy so far, i just want a quality centre back brought in before im 'comfortable' with us cementing cl football again.

It's even better that we have choices that don't always include Gerrard.

I do think we need a CB badly,Carragher is IMHO gone, the number.of times he had his hands holding VanPersie today convinced me his time is coming to an end and KK should do the honourable thing and give him less and less game time, he could be a liability as th season progresses unfortunately

Absolutely, if we are going to move to the next level, Carragher has to be a back up player next season.

Also, can I point out everybody criticising Henderson and Adam etc should remember last season that Meireles was not getting lots of praise and he didn't start to show his true quality until around January.

Every new player needs to be given time to settle in and adapt to their new club.

I think Hodgspn has to hold his hands up there though.

But he was poor last week as well, IMO of course. I'm not writing the chap off, I'm just saying that a week out of the starting XI might be good for him and the team. At the very least, the role Kenny has him playing needs to be revised, as he's been very ineffective.
Well look the first game was a write off for me - the guy was playing against his boyhood club after just leaving them, and he's young enough to let that affect him imo.

Today he did some excellent work in the sense of getting involved with little touches and passes, getting the ball and moving it quickly.

I'm not saying he had a stormer by any means but he certainly grew into the game as it went on - hopefully the same can be done for his season.

I think we'd see the best of him as a central player, he plays like Aquilani imo with the pass and move, little touches style there's just no room for him there.

Absolutely, but his form and perfomances definitely improved.

Also, just realised that Kenny has now played 5 against the top 4 teams.

He's won 4 and drew 1. Not bad for a team who has no chance of getting the top 4 according to the incumbents.

I think Adam has been fairly good in both of the games! Henderson has been solid but the lad still seems a bit nervous he reminds me a bit of Lucas when he was getting stick and was a bit slow on the ball and taking the easy passing options available.

At least he was keeping the ball the majority of times and he has plenty of time to improve. Mighty result today for us!

How strong is Enrique and confident with his defending, in the first half when a ball came flying across and he passed it back to Reina twas a bit too cool for my nerves aswell as Reina's I think. :pac:

Of course Adam is a good player, but let's face it, we weren't competing with Chelsea or City for his signature. He's a squad player.

Didn't he win player of the month in November though? He certainly looked good from the off to me anyway, team wasn't playing well but he still showed that he had quality.

He had also really impressed me during that summer in the World Cup for Portugal.

That said, I 100% agree with the point about being patient with the signings. Its not gonna happen straight away as not every player is a Suarez or Aguero and hits the ground running.

Also Henderson is only 20 (afaik) so to expect him to be dominating midfield against Arsenal in only his 2nd game for the club is a bit much.

Criticism cming in for some of the attacking players today but we should give some credit to our defending and pressing game today. As much as people will say Arsenal had a poor side out they still had RVP Nasri Arshavin and Wallcott and never looked threatening at all.

Lucas seemed to get forward more when Arsenal went down to 10 men which was good to see. Adam also linked well with Meireles as well.

Indeed, I see Meireles as a good foil for Suarez and Carroll, Adam more for Carroll. Ideally Adam will be able to provide the service to Carroll and let Suarez play the second striker rule.

With Gerrard back it would have to be:

    Reina

    Kelly Carra Agger Enrique
    Lucas Adam/Gerrard
    Kuyt/Gerrard Meireles Downing
    Suarez

    Carroll

Henderson, Adam and Kuyt as the rotation players as Meireles, Gerrard and Downing would be starts.

We've Johnson, Flanagan, Aurelio and Robinson as cover for the FB's. Plenty of midfield cover though I'd keep Aquilani and get rid of Cole and Poulsen.

Kuyt can play back up striker but definitely we'd need a back up CB as we don't know how dependable Kelly and Agger will be.

If we can get one of those in the next 10 days it would be a very good transfer window as we'd only need to buy 1 player in January and see how the season goes.

    This x 1000

Suarez and Meireles coming off the bench gave us that extra push over the line.

Granted Arsenal were down to 10 men and depleted but the way we finished the game with regard to style of play, many teams would've found us hard to deal with

I pointed out earlier that as Dalglish has decided to do Hendersons development in the first 11 he's going to take a lot of stick a la Lucas. The difference is that Lucas was playing largely due to lack of alternatives when he started out whereas there is competition for Hendersons spot be it through the middle or wide right. When Gerrard is fit esp if the transfer windows closes with both Meireles and Aquilani still at the club we will get a much better idea of just how much faith Dalglish has in young Jordan.

So let me get this straight ...

You judge a LFC signing and benchmark it against if other clubs were interested or not ?

Thank fcuk you had nothing to do with the Suarez deal then , or he would still be at Ajax with you waiting on Chelsea or City to make an offer first .

Sailing close to the ignore button .

Walcott is by no means a worldbeater but he can still cause serious problems to teams - Enrique destroyed him today

The defence was very good today but alot of it was down to our midfield dominating imo

Not just dominating but cleaning up when Lucas and back 4 put in their tackles. The number of times they backed up the tackler and held the second ball as opposed to hoofing it up the pitch as in previous seasons was great to watch

Watch the highlights again. That gif comes in in the middle of the celebration. Meireles is looking at Lucas, then raises his finger, then looks across the pitch, then back at Lucas.

Adam scored 2 goals from play last season and made 4 assists from open play..

From set pieces he scored 10 goals, 8 were penalties. He made four assists from set pieces.

He doesn't really offer a major threat from play, but from set pieces he is invaluable..

I think he needs a box to box midfielder playing along side him to cover the ground and get forward to help out the strikers..

I don't understand why Adam is being compared to Meireles or Aquilani anyway.

    They play different roles

If you have to explain that to someone at this stage, there's something fundamentally wrong.
