I can't say Wiki without sliding my hand in a DJ like motion and saying "Wik..wik...wik....wikipedia"

    It's like tourettes or something.

Not really, no. It's called Wikipedia.

There are lots of 'Wiki' sites. Wikileaks being a popular one. If someone just said Wiki, unless the conversation had already started and you were discussing something in particular, chances are you wouldn't have a clue which 'wiki' they're talking about.

    My Polish colleague says "Vye-kipedia".

    That doesn't annoy me either.

    Personally, I always say wikipedia.

    WTF?

The post I quoted is the equivelant of the argument that often occurs on AH when someone mentions "The Queen".

Everyone knows the poster means The Queen of England, but you always get someone who says it could be any queen.

I'm pretty sure if someone said "I read on Wiki", you'd presume they meant Wikipedia!

Wikipedia is a Wiki. It was not the first Wiki. Wikis were originated in the mid 90s and used in corporate environments long before Wikipedia.

Yup! But if I said to you "I read on Daniel O'Donnell's wiki page.........." you'd presume I meant Wikipedia and not WikiLeaks right?

No.. I'd assume that there's a wiki site for Daniel O Donnell. Just like there is for so many other specific subjects.

Your ignorance to something that gets you so annoyed is pretty amazing.

Wikipedia is just one of many wikis.
You can learn more on this Wikipedia page

We use a fair few different (internal) wikis at work, calling wikipedia 'wiki' is just confusing.

wiki is the type of architecture and technology used to construct wikipedia. its based on the ability for users to create and edit content. lets break down the name; wiki because it uses the wiki system, pedia because its an encyclopedia.

people calling wikipedia wiki are wrong. people calling wikipedia wikipedia are correct

what you are doing is akin to referring to boards.ie as http://www.

People shortening words for no reason other than to sound like they know what they're talking about really annoys me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,236 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

    I pronounce it as "Wikapedia".

Just thought I'd let you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,046 ✭✭✭✭bnt

Yup: Wiki is the name for the technology - a website that anyone can edit, while Wikipedia is one encyclopaedia site built on Wiki servers. There are other Wiki sites, such as Conservapedia, Sickipedia, World of Warcraft Wiki, and so on. So if you mean Wikipedia, say Wikipedia.

Ye Hypocrites, are these your pranks
To murder men and gie God thanks?
Desist for shame, proceed no further
God won't accept your thanks for murder.

LOL @ the OP - do you also get annoyed when people say Heineken instead of "Heino"? Or what about those idiots that say Spaghetti Bolognaise instead of Spag Bol?

If someone said 'I read it on wiki' they'd just sound like a knob tbh

There hasn't been any such person since 1707. It's like calling her Queen of Liverpool or Queen of Ayrshire. She's Queen of the United Kingdom.

    I say Wikipedia.
    MrStuffins wrote: »

People say The Queen because The Queen of England is the most recognised queen. Its like saying "The Pound" or "The Dollar", The UK and US aren't the only countries to use Pounds/Dollars, but they are the most recognised. I understand your logic, which is right, there's nothing wrong with saying Wiki. But that doesn't mean everyone should stop saying Wikipedia.

To be honest I'm quite the opposite. I HATE when people shorten words. It's pure verbal laziness IMO. 'Wanna come in for a cuppa?' and all that sort of thing. It really gets my panties in a bunch:mad:
