You want to just keep watching this storm it's making history and it is possibly interacting with other weather systems that are not in the models an so intensification of sorts is still a possibility and is unpredictable.

Flooding is now the the biggest threat and whilst major flooding was expected, NJ is declared a disaster area. What resources will be needed for aid remains to be seen.

Hmm, looks like we might not have to wait too long for another hurricane thread.

Hitting NY tomorrow then the clean up on Monday.

It is not like an Irish low pressure system which just hangs around for days sometimes.

There's no attitude like New York attitude
More than 200,000 New Yorkers are under orders to flee a once-in-a-century hurricane, but many in the famed City That Never Sleeps are brushing aside danger -- and heading to the beach.

Hours after Mayor Mike Bloomberg ordered the evacuation from the low-lying Rockaway Beach, the sun-kissed coastline was packed with sunbathers and surfers as city dwellers took the dire warnings about Hurricane Irene in stride.

Roberto Luzuriaga, who was making a brisk business selling Italian Ice desserts to swimmers straight off the sand, echoed the views of many when he said that authorities' warnings were at times self-serving.

"It definitely is a concern, but sometimes things are blown out of proportion. Sometimes the people who make the calls just want to save their asses," said Luzuriaga, who is still debating whether to leave his nearby home.

Many other New Yorkers, and visitors, offered a sense of humor as they waited for the storm. At a dive bar near Rockaway Beach, regulars toasted "Happy Hurricane!" as they downed late-afternoon beers and burgers.

On Rockaway Beach, Katie Richardson was heading to swim and surf with her friends, who all arrived on Thursday from Austin, Texas. She said she barely made her flight as airlines began to scale back service to New York.

Now in New York, the 27-year-old and her friends planned to make the most of their time in the Big Apple, even if it shuts down.

"We're going to ride this out with granola bars and Jameson," she vowed.

5:00 PM EDT Sat Aug 27
    Location: 36.2°N 76.0°W
    Max sustained: 80 mph
    Moving: NNE at 13 mph
    Min pressure: 950 mb

Slow weakening. Wind down by 5mph. Pressure the same as the last advisory, still lower than it was at landfall.

    HURRICANE IRENE DISCUSSION NUMBER 30
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL092011
    500 PM EDT SAT AUG 27 2011

THE CENTER OF IRENE HAS BEEN MOVING ACROSS EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
THIS AFTERNOON...AND THE RADAR PRESENTATION OF THE INNER CORE
ACTUALLY IMPROVED FOR A FEW HOURS. SINCE THAT TIME...THE RAGGED
EYE HAS FILLED IN BUT THE CENTER REMAINS WELL DEFINED ON
    RADAR...WHICH WARRANTS A RETURN TO TWO-HOURLY INTERMEDIATE
    ADVISORIES.
AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT
REPORTED PEAK FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 85-90 KT TO THE EAST OF THE
CENTER DURING THE PAST FEW HOURS...AND A VERY RECENT CENTER DROP
MEASURED A MINIMUM PRESSURE OF 950 MB. THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY
RECENT SFMR DATA...BUT BASED ON THE EARLIER SHARP DISCREPANCY
BETWEEN THE FLIGHT-LEVEL AND SURFACE WINDS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY
IS REDUCED TO 70 KT. A SLOW WEAKENING IS EXPECTED AS IRENE MOVES
ALONG THE COAST OF THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES DUE TO LAND
    INTERACTION...COLDER WATERS...DRY AIR ENTRAINMENT...AND INCREASING
SOUTHWESTERLY SHEAR. BECAUSE THE LARGE WIND FIELD WILL TAKE TIME
TO SPIN DOWN...HOWEVER...IRENE IS STILL EXPECTED TO REACH THE NEW
YORK AREA AT OR NEAR HURRICANE STRENGTH
    .

MORE SO THAN WITH MOST STORMS...THE WINDS WITH IRENE INCREASE
SHARPLY WITH HEIGHT ABOVE THE SURFACE. AS IRENE MOVES THROUGH
AREAS WITH HIGH-RISE STRUCTURES...THESE STRUCTURES WILL EXPERIENCE
WINDS SIGNIFICANTLY STRONGER THAN INDICATED BY THE ADVISORY
INTENSITY. WINDS AT THE 30-STORY LEVEL WILL LIKELY BE 20 PERCENT
HIGHER THAN AT THE SURFACE...AND WINDS 80-100 STORIES UP COULD BE
ABOUT 30 PERCENT HIGHER THAN AT THE SURFACE
    .

THE CENTER CONTINUED NORTHWARD FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AFTER THE
RELEASE OF THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY BUT HAS RESUMED A NORTHEASTWARD
MOTION OF ABOUT 015/11. IRENE IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTH-
NORTHEASTWARD ALONG THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST TONIGHT AND OVER NEW
ENGLAND ON SUNDAY. AFTER THE CYCLONE BECOMES EXTRATROPICAL IN 36-48
HOURS IT SHOULD TURN NORTHEASTWARD THEN EAST-NORTHEASTWARD IN THE
MID-LATITUDE WESTERLIES. THE NEW TRACK FORECAST IS UNCHANGED FROM
    THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY
    .

NOTE THAT ESTIMATES OF STORM TOTAL RAINFALL HAVE BEEN INCREASED WITH
    THIS ADVISORY...TO 20 INCHES
    .

Remember this? It's been very wet for most of August so the ground is quite saturated already.

What effect does low pressure have? Does it make the storm more dangerous/unstable?

It makes a storm surge more likely as there's less pressure on the water so it's much higher.

I'm sure if I'm wrong but I also would've thought such low pressure would mean even more water going into the atmosphere to fall as rain.

If the max speeds predicted are 80mph am I right in assuming this is the avg over a 1 min period? Is it possible to estimate max gusts from this figure. I notice in Met Eireann forecasts during winter storms it is usually the max gust speed that is the headline figure.

Over 3 million without power now, and that will probably rise a lot higher as Irene moves closer to areas that are even more densely populated.

Pressure has been (finally) very slowly rising but NHC is keeping her max winds at 80mph.

Looks like the flooding threat for NY will be a close call, depending on if the surge rises at the same time as high tide.

I heard there were 11 deaths last night, I dont know if thats still the count.
