I don't have any myself but a good few friends have them. Some can be really pretty and / or cool others like dragons, crosses etc IMO look awful.

Might as well stamp 'Cheap and Tacky' on your forehead.

Only for total successes who don't care what people think, or total losers.

Any ordinary punter who has it done ,in my opinion, is a total and unequivocal knacker.

    That's the way I roll.

I love the tattoos on my husband, but I don't have one myself - I've thought about it, I admit - was going to have one on my 50th birthday (yes, really - my Mum always said never to get one because it'd be with me for life - I reckoned at 50 I could handle that) but couldn't think what to have, so why do it just for the sake of it? There are not many tatts I like on women - can't stand the small ones, but those who go for full sleeves or backs can look really good.

I'm all for tatoos. I've quite a few of them myself, but I've always thought that ones on the hands, neck or neck looks really tacky. I'd never get them there.

Yes i do realise it's on me for the rest of my life, im 18 i can do whatever i like as far as i'm concerned. The thing is people with tattoos think they look amazing and love to show them off. Its all well and good seeing Beckham and the like prancing about with tat's all over. Celeb's/Rock Stars can get away with it.

Johnny, the plumber from down the road however, just looks like a yob. :p

Tattoos themselves are cheap and tacky.

Tacky? Well that depends on your view of them really. But cheap? Certainly not! They cost a damn fortune :pac:

    +1 on that.

If your a Pro Sports player or a top Musician/Actor people may say behind your back "... he's looks like some tosser..." but it won't matter because your making a fortune from doing what you love and most likely ridin' the highest quality of women.

If your an ordinary Joe Soap it's screaming to the world "check me out, i'm different, i'm special, i'm cool!"

I sense delusions of grandeur anytime I see people with a Tattoo.

    short sighted and tacky rather.

    attention seeking exercise also.

Bad monetary investment would be another one :pac:

how can you judge people on their appearance ?..

My brother admitted to not liking his first tattoo. I wonder whether a lot of people with tattoos actually end up depising them but pretend to like them because they're stuck with them. And is that why they get more tattoos, to deflect attention from the shít one they got.

I don't really mind the small tattoo on the back of the neck so much (although i prefer tats that you can hide easily) but dear god the ones on the side of the neck are horrible. Unless your a Latin King- just NO.

I have a few tattoos, but I make sure they're all hidden from open sight.

So for example, if I happen to get a job that requires a suit in the future, it doesn't look as "good" if I had a lot of visible tattoo's.

Some tattoos on the back of the neck can be quite good, as long as it's not that god awful Barcode. It's actually worse than a tramp stamp.

ok i agree that the barcode is aload of crap.

but i cant stand that when a woman gets a tattoo on their lower back, its refered to as a "tramp stamp" but when a guy does it, fair enough?

    double frickin standards

If it was a good one it could be deadly! I've seen loads of cool neck tattoos.

Depends on the design and if its done well. Any bad tattoo can look cheap and tacky no matter where it is on your body.

I wouldn't get it done cause I want a professional job but that's all that would stop me. If someone doesn't need to hide tattoos for a job and has a cool design why not get it on your neck? I love seeing tattoos on people, shame a lot of good ones need to be hidden.

i'd never judge someone on their appearance (what god gave them)

Its perfectly fair to judge someone for getting something idiot permanently marked onto their body that they may see as fashionable at a particular moment in time.

People who flaunt silly tattoo's are open to comment though, they are seeking attention is essence. I doubt theres anyone with a tattoo who hasn't either shown it off, or bullsh*tted on about what it stands for.

There will come a time where it will be "cool" to NOT have any body ink. It seems more people have tattoo's then those who don't.

Depends on the tattoo. While I don't like most, some can be beautiful. Peoples views on them are just bad when they see so many crap generic ones.

This thread made me think of Professor Greens tattoo.
He was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle, and got ''lucky'' tattoo'd near the scar. Cool because it actually means something, and the guy's famous. Would look terrible on the everyday dude.

judging someone's physical appearance is shallow, thats something they cannot do anything about. Its how they were born

You can judge someone over their decision to get a silly looking permanent stamp on them in fairness.

If someone is born ugly, gorgeous, tall, small theres damn all they can have done. To judge them on that is shallow

If they get a tattoo thats a conscious decision. Couple that with the fact folk with tattoo's like to show them off then damn right they are open to judgement.

I have two tattoos and I hope to get more in the near future. The ones I have are out of sight, unless I'm stretching, as they're on the inside of my upperarm, just by my armpit. Would never get one on my neck though, it would look bad whenever I get a proper job.

Like the other poster said it's fair enough to judge someone by how they choose to present themselves to the world.

Tattoo's picked out of a sample book or are imitations of some celebrities tattoo are ridiculous and cheap looking generally.

However I like to see tattoos that look as though thought has gone into them, that the person has personalised with the artist and that is unique.

Not mad on tattoos that are placed purposely to get noticed, or people who adjust their clothing to make their tat more revealing.

Someone who gets a personal, meaningful tattoo and doesn't constantly show it off is someone I wouldn't judge.

Hand, neck or face tattoo says that that person will never pass an interview for anything.
Unless they can become self-employed, they will never have a good job.

I don't think tattoos on the neck are tacky but you'd wanna be very sure about it. Theyre much harder to hide for work.

Not everyone wants to work ;)

I think they're just attention seeking, and many people openly admit that they love attention so it's their body, they could be doing worse things for attention.

It's shallow to judge anybody based on their appearance tbh.

Shallow is basing your opinion on someone based entirely on their appearance and not taking into account their personality.

If someone is sporting a stupid-looking tattoo it arguably does say something about their personality.

It's a physical manifestation of some of the types of personalities that I don't generally get on with, so I will avoid them.

    Maybe a bit narrow-minded, but I don't think it's shallow.

See my response to boneyarsebogman above.

    Answer me this:

You step out of a building and on one side of the street you see a few dodgy looking characters (lets say junkies) coming towards you.

On the other side of the street are a few normal Joe Soaps (lets say some office workers)

Which side of the street are you going to choose to walk along?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

I like tattoos, but one on your neck where you can't hide it at the back with hair is something that could really give you a lot of stick depending on what you do in life, cheap and tacky doesnt come into that though.

Whether your fat or thin, tall or small doesn't say anything about your personality.

The clothes you choose to wear, the way you wear your hair and whether or not you have Tattoo's generally can say things about your personality.

The fact that you can change hairstyles and fashion over the course of your life and not a Tattoo tells me a lot about someone who chooses to get a Tattoo particularly (getting back to the OP) a visible one like on your neck.

Because sometimes it's necessary and benificial to pre-judge someone based on appearance in order to avoid danger or hassle.

As i've stated before using this example:
