I'm thinking of doing a music module as an elective this semester. I was looking at MUS10130, Stage One Recital. Just wondering what its like and is it easy enough to get a good mark? :)

    MUS10130
    Stage One Recital
    Either Sem 1 OR 2
    Dr Lawrence

This module will facilitate students in preparing and presenting a half-hour recital. The module is directed primarily at instrumental or vocal performers in the classical and Irish traditions, but consideration will be given to performers working in other musical traditions subject to certain criteria. Students must agree a recital programme in consultation with the module coordinator at the beginning of the semester. The end of semester recital is a public event and the student must prepare a printed programme for this event which should be approved by the module coordinator before it goes to print. At stage one the School of Music expects a performance level comparable to Grade 8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Students who wish to take this module will have a meeting and short audition with the module coordinator at the beginning of semester. If the module coordinator is satisfied that you demonstrate the ability and resolve to prepare a recital programme while working autonomously you will be admitted to the module.

Entry to this module is by audition.
Students who wish to register for this module can either download an application from the School of Music's website or pick up an application form from the School's administrative ofiice, Newman Building, room J301. Registration alone does not guarantee participation.

Basically, you will need to very proficient in your chosen instrument, and very much preferably you will perform works from the classical range.

You also need to prepare a programme which will involve research on the pieces you're performing, and presenting them in the same way you would see at a classical performance.

In other words, it would be difficult to get an excellent grade unless you're already an excellent musician.

Entry is by audition though, so you could always go for the audition and they'll tell you whether or not you qualify. The only problem there is that if you don't pass the audition you might have missed out on the chance to register for another elective module you were interested in..

I'd recommend the "Musics of the World" module as an elective if it's being offered this year. It's a very interesting class. For the recital module you'd need a high level of performance in your chosen instrument (as in, have done grade exams or some such, not "I can play a standard 4-chorder on a guitar). If your performance is good though the recital would be handy enough for marks.

Unfortunately, you can't do this as an elective, unless your on the BMus!
