Prizes for Highest Scores?

This is a bit of a random question but are there prizes given out to the people who scored the highest in each subject in the Leaving each year?
My mam says she knows someone who got one but I've never heard it mentioned in the papers or anything.

I believe what you are describing is a scholarship. Although I believe they are handed out on a points basis rather than on a specific subject. Saying that, I know people from where I live (in the Donegal Gaeltacht) receiving scholarships for obtaining an A1 in Irish.

People in my school have won Applied Maths, Spanish and Italian prizes.. but they were a few years ago so I have no idea if they're still running or if they exist in any other subjects?

I know some one that got one for Maths about 10 years ago, dunno if they still do them. you have to be hitting 99% to be in contention.
Last year a friend got 99% in English (only lost 4 marks on the entire paper :eek:) but didn't get anything for it afaik.

A girl in my school got a prize for getting 100% in DCG 2 years ago

The Institute of Chemistry give out medals to those who get top marks in Chemistry. Free breadsticks and a few glasses of champagne too.

A girl in my school got a gold medal (I think it was a medal anyway..) for having the best Geography paper in the country last year.

Where I couldn't find a general link, I searched for the 2010 or 2009 award. Seems this gold medal stuff is true....

a guy in my town who got 600 points the other day got a prize back when we did the JC for getting 100% in JC HL Maths... you get to go to a ceremony but I think that's all
