Dog stands guard for week until trapped friend found

Settler Tillie and Phoebe, a basset hound, were missing for a week in Washington. Vashon Island Pet Protectors posted photos on Facebook in hopes that someone would spot the dogs.

VIPP volunteers had been helping search for the dogs and on Monday they got a call from a someone reporting that for a few days when they were out on their property, a "reddish" dog had been coming up to them and then promptly headed back into a ravine.

Amy Carey with VIPP said volunteers made their way into the ravine and after a bit of searching, finally heard the sweet sound they had been waiting for all week: a small one-woof response when they called out Tillie.

A few minutes later they found her lying beside an old cistern with her head resting on the concrete wall.

"They knew that meant Phoebe was inside the cistern and every breath was held and every doggie prayer offered that the peek over the rim would somehow find her safe," Carey said.

"And it was a time we have a happy ending with dear Phoebe found perched on some concrete rubble that held her out of the water," she said. "For nearly a week Tillie stayed by her side with the exception of the few minutes of each day when she went for help."

Both dogs were cold and hungry but are doing well.

Ruby is unbelievably smart and talks in context all the time. If the puppies start play fighting she'll say "Jamie, stop". I was teaching her to give kisses but she wasn't too keen and I was delighted when she started showering me in kisses the last couple of days. Then I noticed that she only did it in the kitchen to make my other African Grey jealous. She'd kiss me and then look at Charlie as if to say "see, I'm the favourite" lol. She wasn't impressed when Charlie gave me a kiss today and started huffing and puffing and told him "you're very bold".

She used to sleep in her cage but she's comfortable now in the apartment and changed to sleeping on top of the door* so she can see the whole apartment. When it gets to about 10.30/11, she'll climb on top of the door and start saying "time for bed". I've only had her a year so I can't wait to see how she progresses in the long term. She's definitely the boss in our house.

I was going to the toilet last night and she woke up with a fright and said "fcuking bitch, you're very bold". (I didn't teach her to curse, she learned it from a previous owner and knows to use it when she's p1ssed off about something :eek:)

*I put a screen door in the kitchen doorway so I can close it and keep the puppies and parrots separate when I'm not at home. I forgot to close it one day which is how the puppies were able to trash the place.
