Not a great race but one of his sons almost landed a Byrnes gamble at Gowran today. 16/1 in the morning into 4/1SP. Beat by a rag with a Betfair SP of over 200/1.

A few of the lads told me to back it on the basis of a huge step up in trip & Russell being booked to ride. I didn't FWIW

Was thinking the same although maybe it was double bluff

I remember a guy telling me Stuart Williams was lethal for that. 2nd or 3rd run in a maiden, you think they're just getting him handicapped & that's when he goes for it

I don't trust Byrnes further than I'd throw him. Does anyone remember that bumper years ago where he had the first two home? Think the first one had been well backed, but the second one absolutely cruised all over it, jockey pretended to hit him and got him beat,Byrnes got away with it because he told the stewards that wasn't how he told him to ride it

Yes of course he has a great page but to stand for 40,000 euro in his first year was crazy. He beat a poor New Approach in Newmarket(times suggest new approach was below par). Also Finsceal beo as a four year old when she had lost her spark. I feel him been so late to come to hand, suggests his prodigy would be similar and in general that's a bit late.

He had the looks and the pedigree, but as you say a 4 year old is very late. 40,000 was plenty to pay, but Coolmore like any good stud farm will make sure they make their money on a stallion before the prodigy race in case he proves disappointing. Footstepsinthesand springs to mind, Dylan Thomas at 35.

I know he's a very good stallion, but the best business move Coolmore have made in many a year is getting mares sent to Giant's Causeway at 100,000 punts his first year at stud.

Does anyone know what that would equate to in today's money?

Wow that's an amazing fee , maybe it was the whole craze around Storm Cat and the fact he was a superb racehorse on turf and dirt. He went up from USD75,000 to USD200,000 in 2004 then USD300,000 the following year 2005.

Sea the Stars-Look Here caught the eye so too did Sea The Stars-Vodka. Not a bad number of Danehill Dancers but not one of them being Coolmore owned. Galileo and Montjeu obviously very popular, literally one or two Mastercraftsman. Don't even remember seeing a Dylan Thomas or Duke of Marmalade. Can't see them hanging around Coolmore for much longer. Fastnet Rock-My Emma another who caught the eye

Lots of Dylan Thomas's running over 6 and 7f in singapore / HK. Mr Armstrong won 2nyt and is outta Dylan Thomas.

Frankel begins his stallion career this Friday (14th of Feb!) at Banstead Manor Stud. 135 mares booked this season @ £125k each.

We're all probably familiar with the foal share agreement between Juddmonte and Coolmore, but I didn't realise that Kind was one of ten mares originally due to visit Sadler's Wells. When he became ill, Juddmonte agreed to switch those ten mares to the best two stallions available, which at that time were Montjeu and Galileo. Phillip Mitchell is quoted as saying "If I'm honest, she would probably never have visited Galileo unless she was part of that package". When it comes to deciding who chooses the resultant foals of those mares, both Coolmore and Juddmonte independently grade the ten foals and on an alternate picks basis, select their five. That year, it was Juddmonte's turn to have first pick and chose the Galileo - Kind colt whom they had listed as their number one choice.

The rest, as they say, is history but we should be thankful that we didn't end up with another Bullet Train.........

There is a bit more to the agreement. Read it at the weekend (cannot remember which paper but its from the same article).

If Juddmonte or Coolmore land a "lucky" one ie one of the foals turns out to be a superstar, then the other Operation shouldn't get punished just because they didn't have first pick that year. So they get 10 free nominations with that Stallion. A consolation I suppose.

Program last night on BBC radio "Frankel at stud".Firstly I think the hype has become a little Beckhamesk.His book of mares is 135 with inital 220 requests at 125k a pop.His first official marel[after test mare] is Midday at 12 noon today[she currently has a Galileo foal].He is boxed beside Oasis dream and Dansili and Philip Mitchell was asked if he is a hit what price could he go to and his reply was "Dansili started at 8k and is now 80k".There are no plans to go to Australia but we are currently in talks about Australian mares comming here when their time is right.Head auctioneer at tattersalls Newmarket was asked if the unlikely event of a first crop Frankel yearling was put up for sale what would he fetch"very minimum starting bid of 300k and then sit back at watch".

That list of ladies for Frankel is jaw dropping.
I see Lightning Pearl (Pearl Bloodstock/Ger Lyons' Gr1 filly) is listed go go to him, interesting one for me.

I think it's a massive fee to pay, and a massive gamble. There is only one guarantee in this, that there will be a regression back to the mean when it comes to his progeny. The hope for speculators can only be that he will benchmark a new mean, that is slightly better than the old one (if you get what I'm saying).

If I could afford the £125k now, I could probably afford to hold off for a couple of years and spend £300k either on him (if he's proven) or Galileo.

Agree rockycelt, people jumping the gun because of who him as a racehorse. Whilst he was sure to be popular, I never thought he'd be that high. At 85 thousand euros I'd much rather Sea the Stars given his pedigree-slight concern about Cape Cross as a sire of sires but Invincible Spirit is a proper stallion and he's a Green Desert too

Hi guys, just flicking back through this thread and was interested in the discussion about Flemsforth's nomination price and the movement that's in it. I've heard that this type of price movement and bargaining is par for the course when it comes to the NH game but can anybody tell me if the same goes on with flat stallions or whether the guys at the upper end of the market hold the line regarding price?

Yeah Richie. Most guys will tell you that there is pretty big room for negotiation in NH sire fees and I was just wondering if that is the same with the top flat stallions? So, for example, Acclamation is 35k this year (just picking this as an example), is it 35k for all comers or would you do a better deal the better mare you had?

Appreciate it's a bit of a hypothetical situation, but just trying to get a feel for the area. Thanks

Apprently he's gone to Poonwalla Stud in India, who also stood/stands former Ballydoyle inmate Ace and also Arazan, who I seem to recall has thrown up a couple of nice NH horses, I think one or two of his have shifted for reasonable money at the sales of late.... There would be some on here that could answer better but pretty sure there is room for manouver especially if the stallion hasn't a full book...Not so sure of the upper end of the scale I remember reading on the Betfair forum someone claiming they knew someone who used Galileo and there were conditions the length of his arm, something like if it was a colt he'd give it up, not sure how true it is

Yep, bit of a brainfart there. Arazan is still a sore point with me, I put him in my ten to follow for his 3yr old season. And left out sea the stars. FML, that didn't end well...

hhmm yeah guess you have a point, but im presuming he wouldnt have been getting the top mares over the years.
