Maybe a silly question, but how important is it to have weedbarrier material under a driveway?! Have heard that it doesn't really stop weeds growing on gravel driveways and that you need to periodically spray them off anyway.

Horticultural liners will inhibit weed growth below the surface but over time it is not unusual for weeds to grow on the surface as the gravel becomes silted and soiled, hence the need to spray the area (at least annually).

Quality of barriers can vary quite a bit, some are effective for relatively short periods and others for very long periods. A case of you get what you pay for.

A deep (> 200mm) compacted sub-base would also be a very effective sub-terranean weed barrier.

theres no need for weed barrier under tarmac or a concrete drive, but if its a stone driveway yes u would need it and the best one would be a barrier called TERAM its the best out there

A sub base would be at least 150-200mm of compacted "804 hardcore" stones and then a minimum of 50-75mm base of sharp sand to lay the pavers on

50 meter roll of Mypex is 50-60 euro. The Mypex goes in between the 804 hardcore and the layer of sharp sand. Then install your pavers.

Brush in Silica sand into the gaps between the paving slabs/bricks,and you wont have any problems with weeds.

Alot of builders/block layers and landscapers just use sharp sand to fill the gaps, but silica sand is the way to go,as its a finer sand and it also prevents weeds gettting in and growing too.

    Works a treat too.
