Ian Brown in Harry Potter. That's a cameo.

Jack White as Elvis in 'Walk Hard', pretty lame film, some good cameos though.

I thought the cameos in Walk Hard were great, particularly "the four beatles"

    .
Funny when you consider his stance on tipping waiters/waitresses in Reservoir Dogs

It's not actually Pulp, it's Jarvis Cocker and Johnny and Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway from Radiohead!

I suppose this classes as a cameo

Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider was his catapult to the big time and the arrival of a new movie star

Surprised no-one has mentioned Speilberg in Paul

Forest Whittikers cameo in ER was class

Alec Baldwin's powerhouse display in Glengarry Glen Ross. For me that has to be one of the greatest speeches in film and it's probably the reason he's a household name today.
That's not anythign clsoe to a cameo.
Baldwin was a main charcter, his picture and name were used on the poster.

billy zane in zoolander is a personal favourite of mine, purely for this line.

'put a cork in it, Zane!'

I thought David Bowie in zoolander was better.

    That's completely intentional imo.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Peter Jackson appearing in each of the LoTR films, very very brief, blink and you'll miss it,

Brad Pitt in True Romance for that matter.

Some people consider that to be a cameo, but I personally wouldn't.

It's not like he was a superstar when True Romance was made. The only films of significance that he had behind him at that stage were Thelma and Louise and Kalifornia. In the former, he didn't have a lead role, and the latter wasn't a huge film.

The size of the role he was given in True Romance was not an obvious mismatch for his status at the time so, in my opinion, it wasn't a cameo.

I'm not sure if it's 'great', but Hunter S. Thompson has a cameo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I thought that was great tbh

It's the narration that makes it so good.

When Depp, as Raoul Duke, see the real like Hunter S Thompson, he says something like,

    "There I was . . . mother of God, there I am!"

I don't remember that part of it! Thought there was just some fleeting glimpse of him in an elevator or something. Must rewatch it.

Austin Powers' Goldmember is another that comes to mind and probably has the most. Tom Cruise, Kevin Spacey, Britney Spears and Danny DeVito all make a brief appearance. Although probably wouldn't be considered "Great" cameos :D

    Good spot though.

I am embarrassed to admit it but:

There is a movie (presumably based on a Maeve Binchy novel) about two women who swap houses for a summer, and Irish lady goes to the US and vice versa.

Anyway, in on scene, in a Restaurant, Ms Binchy is sitting at a bar.

EDIT: It is called, Tara Road.

    Was it a great cameo?

My favourite is Bill Murray in The Darjeeling Limited. Such a tease.

Prolly not, but at least it was actually a cameo unlike most of the suggestions here.

Well as you could probably tell from my choices, I meant cameo in the broader sense of the word, a brief appearance 5-10 mins as I said, not just a blink and you'll miss it moment. Baldwin's appearance is probably a bit too important though I admit.

I know that's why you chose it. As it was a brief appearance. But i was pointing out that it's not a cameo, not even in a broad sense of the word. Are you sure it was only 5-10mins?
A similar role was Anthony Hopkins as Hanibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. picked up the oscar for best actor for only 16minutes screen time. Obviously not a cameo.

I don't mean to single you out either, just that it was the first post. Most of the suggestions haven't been cameos.

Well given that they're so well known, I felt it would overshadow poor Stephen, he gets little enough credit as it is, what with his brother being the greatest actor of all time.

Good call! Although personally I preferred David Hasselhoff giving out shíte to the losing German team in German! :pac: The Lance Armstrong guilt-trip scene was good too, in spite of the fact that Armstrong couldn't act to save his life.

For pure geek heaven I enjoyed (blink and you'll miss it) spotting Nick Frost and Simon Pegg in Land of the Dead, not to mention Shaun of the Dead itself "appearing" in Hot Fuzz. :)

What made that even funnier for me was the fact that the dvd was in the bargain bin for 99p or something similar :)

Don't be ridiculous, she has never, and will never win a best actor oscar, she's a woman. :)

Joking aside, she won best supporting, Hopkins won Best outright, so its not really comparable.
Her role wasn't even the shortest screentime for best supporting actress

Who do you think made the best cameo role in a movie ever? There have been many movie cameos over the years with plenty of actors playing themselves, briefly turning up to crack a joke and then disappearing but I'm not interested in those.

I'm talking about serious actors who turn up for one scene and steal the entire film regardless of how much time they are given on screen.

The best cameo of all time for me was Montgomery Clift in Judgment at Nuremburg. Powerfull and painfull to watch, its a work of acting beauty. Mickey Rourke also delivered a heart breaking cameo in the movie The Pledge.

David Bowie in The Prestige as the enigmatic, mysterious Nikola Tesla. I loved his intro, where he is walking through a massive 'cloud' of electricity. Sums up his character perfectly, and Bowie gives a great performance as the inventor who lives in seclusion in Colorado Springs.
