Another year or so and buyers of 3-4 year old cars will be hunting out Kia's.. a 2nd or 3rd hand car with years of warranty remaining! IMHO I think resale will be stronger.

I've heard to keep the warranty you have use main dealer servicing and its very expensive. Maybe its reduced lately though.

If that's true, then I think they are breaking an EU law whereby Manufacturers have to honour warranties so long as it was maintained by a qualified mechanic using approved parts.

I suppose there may be some argument over what exactly 'qualified mechanic' and 'approved parts' are defined as.

The new S60 is a great car.

    Fiat Sedici

I'm not sure how they are rated by other folk but I think they are a grand car. They are a Suzuki SX4 with the 1.9 multijet diesel (same engine as the Vectra and Saab 9-3), powerful, handle well and have a nice quality interior. They give a bit of trouble if the DPF filter doesn't regenerate right(due to blocked EGR valves and boost pressure sensors) but apart from that they are reliable.
Hold on there Frankie, What are you comparing this bold statement against?
It might be a powerful car that handles well to you, but I would beg to differ.
I duno, are we loosing sight of the meaning of the thread? Everyone has cars that they like/love but does that make them "underrated".
    Just my 2c.

You can add all new citroens to that. Completely re-invented themselves. I'm already eyeing up a DS4 for my next car!

    Bye bye RX8???

    Bye bye RX8???

Since I saw you post - what about a Mazda 6 MPS?

4WD, 2.3T, high spec and can be bought pretty reasonably? Also looks like a normal 1.8 with a set of alloys to most people.

    Or even the 3 MPS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,347 ✭✭✭si_guru

Jimny... plus you can drift in the rain.

MAZDA MPS... I think the emissions are the issue. The performace speaks for itself.

Not to be kissing anyone's ass here (EPM) but the Octavia vRS is a very underrated car. It's filled with options as standard and looks well especially with the painted calipers.

OT - What does vRS actually stand for?

    ...

I think its a car thats not "rated" by a lot of people.

The problem with that is, not everyone values the same things, the same.

How would emissions be an issue since all 3/6MPS's were registered in Ireland before July 1st 2008?

EDIT: Another underrated car for me is the Renault 5.

    IIRC

RS = Rally Sport... but FORD apparently have a copyright on that so Skoda added the "v"... for Vrchlabí - the Octavia factory.

Well spotted I was thinking of my previous life in the UK.. where we would buy a car with £150 road tax and poo poo a car with £180 road tax! Happy times. :)

There are a few other ideas on that one too. One is Victory Rally Sport, the other is 2 fingers being stuck up at Ford...I'd go with your one or the Victory tag tbh;)

I don't think the MPS is under-rated though. Just more kind of forgotten. People don't think of buying one. Maybe it is under rated a bit alright. I think it's as good a saloon as you can get for around 10 grand, but I know Matt Sims would completely disagree. He's the only one though! :p

Very surprised to hear no mention of the Ford Mondeo ST220 petrol and diesel. Also the Alfa 156 2.4 jtd is quite underrated too...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 696 ✭✭✭Monty.

The Mark 3 Cavalier / Vectra

I owned one of these and loved it.

Fantastic driver, great road holding, easy to work on, reliable.

An off duty traffic cop once told me they hated chasing them because they held the road so well they could loose most cop cars on the back roads.

When I saw Volvoman's original post of the Peaugot i made me search for the hero inside myself for some reason..

The 306 was also a savage car, perhaps its more to do with the diesel engines that were in them.

The 306 Van was a popular choice for Vets in my neck of the woods from memory

I dunno, the STxxx moniker is a manufacturer "plus" rating, I think they are rated where they should be.
And really who underrates a 5pot turbo-charged 2.4litre Alfa? The thing is like under 1400kg too!

Well it does seem like a list of cars people like for little or no reason..

Mitsubishi Colt - bulletproof reliability, handled well, cheap to run, not bad looking, doesn't quite have the boy racer stigma that Civics had

the newer shape colt is a cracking little car as well, often overlooked in the small car market

Not true, as long as original parts are used, the correct service intervals maintained and the book stamped then any garage can do the servicing and you keep your warranty.. As for the price, the last service on my Carens came in at 100 euros, good for main dealer work. I go there because it's as close to me as the nearest indy guy who charges roughly the same rates. The only thing I'm gutted about is the 7 year warranty came in the year after I bought mine so I'm stuck with the paltry 5 year one insted!!;) She was tested yesterday and sailed through with a year left on the warranty, how many other makes can make the same claim???

What's wrong with Vw's? I've 240,000 k on mine and I know plenty of people with the same if not more mileage on them without a bit of bother.

That's exactly the way it's gone, and there's no other way about it. Sad really  People call them dreamers asking for mad money for them, but they make it, because they're popular (I'm not saying they're not dreamers).

Have you ever heard of the tale of the king's clothes?

There is no doubt that most VW's are overrated though, and overpriced. Their marketing in the 80's and 90's was excellent and that's why people still fall head over heels for them today. There are countless cars that deserve as much respect as the likes of the Mk2 but don't get it.

I haven't, some of the skangered Audi's are overpriced, but most Vw seem to hold value alot better then other marques.

Ie. I saw a 05 Passat sell for 5.5k and a 05 Mg ZT for 2.5k. It's not the fact the Passat is overpriced, the Zt in my eyes is underpriced.
