How do the Electives work?

Hi I'm an incoming first year into Science in UCD.

Last year at the open day I couldn't decide between Physics, Computer Science or Engineering. The guy at the stand for Computer Science explained to me that even if I was in another course I could take as many modules from the Computer Science course as I wanted, provided they didn't clash with my own.

Likewise my mate who wanted to do medicine was told the first year course has very few hours because Medicine students are *expected* to take another course on the side as well.

But on the website SIS says it allows 50 programme credits and 10 elective credits. Does that mean I can only take up to 2 elective modules? Or can I take as many as I want??

Is this Science Omnibus? I'm pretty sure you can choose Computer Science modules (among others) in first year as part of your programme. i.e. you wouldn't have to do them as electives. You need to look up your course on the site and see how it's mapped out.

Yeah Science Omnibus. But I'm already down for Mathematical and Physical Sciences so I'll have less choice of what modules to pick.

How many credits do you have to do in those two subjects?

Well the Course is Science (Mathematics and Physical Science). It just says "core modules central to your course will be pre-selected." I'm not sure how many modules/credits that includes. And until I pay the registration fees I cant progress to the module selection page to see...

As far as I know, first years can't register their modules until the 1st of September. You don't have to pay your fees just yet :P

Second page of the "Science at UCD". IT should say the area you specialised up the top in greyish text. A few paragraphs down it should say "If you have an interest in..."

I specified Biological side of things and it says a few lines on what to do if I'm interested in Maths/Physics. Hope my waffle is of some help.

You should be checking pages like this to understand electives:

Hasn't Comp Sci been removed from Science Omnibus?

OP: 2 electives per year (i.e. two modules)

You can change what area you wish to specify in by September the 23rd I think!

Also, you should hav recieved some booklets from UCD today. I know I did... May start reading them actually

Ok I see now you're bound to only 10 credits when choosing electives. Then after 10th September you have the option of choosing up to 10 more credits, but you have to pay for them....

    So how much are they?

Why would you want more classes?!!??!!?!?!?

You won't have enough time to do 14 classes!! It's around 500 for a module! If you pick extra electives and are then struggling with a core module your going to jeopardise passing your actual course! Don't concentrate on electives too much you want to do well in your core subjects!
