Liam Sheedy will officially open Relay for Life Tipperary at 5pm this Saturday at St Michael’s GAA Park in Toomevara. Families and members of the public are invited to attend this 24-hour event and a wide range of entertainment and fun activities are being organised for all ages (see below).

Relay for Life is a very special overnight, community celebration and a unique, empowering and fun event. At the heart of Relay is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have left us.

39 teams from all over the county (almost 900 participants in total) are taking part in the event, and members of each team will take turns to walk around the track continuously for the 24-hours – this is in recognition of the fact that cancer never sleeps. This element is enlivened by novelty laps spread throughout the 24 hours, such as a three-legged lap, a backwards lap, a Siege of Ennis lap, a potato and spoon lap as well as a welly lap, and Elvis lap and fancy dress laps. Survivors are central in Relay and the first lap is a survivors lap, followed by a carers lap before the teams take to the track.
Entertainment begins after the opening ceremony with Noel, Phil, Jessie and Eddie taking to the stage at 5.30pm, Ignition at 6.30pm, Tom Lawlor and Friend at 7.30pm, Uncle Egg at 8.30pm, and Raffiki at 9.20pm. The Candle of Hope ceremony at 10pm will begin with a number by the Bracken brothers Shane & Tony and close with two numbers performed by the Silvermines Folk Choir, recently returned from their very successful performances in Lourdes with this year’s Diocesan pilgrimage. Ger and Madeline Lovett will take the stage with their Karaoke at 10.30pm, with Shane Bracken performing at midnight. Background music will play from 4am Sunday morning and at 7am there will be ‘Wake-up Shake-up’ with Buster’s Bootcamp. The Borrisokane Choir will be there at 9.30am, Pat white at 10.30 am, with Shay Spain and Friends at 11.30am. There is an Irish dancing display by the McCloone OMeara Academy of Irish Dancing at 1pm, followed by the Wig Wam Glam Band at 1.30pm and ebony at 3.30pm, leading up to the Fightback against Cancer ceremony at 4.30pm and the closing ceremony at 5pm.
Fun/novelty activities during the 24 hours will include a bouncy castle from 5.30pm, Saturday, a stilt walker at 11am Sunday, Sunflower Show (under 6 years) at midday and again at 4pm, fire juggling at 1pm and 4pm, Art and Mask making at 1pm, and a circus workshop at 1.30pm (maximum 24 children, first come first served).

This is only the third and biggest Relay for Life event into be held Ireland, so do come along and have a great time.
