    Hope this is the right place just wondering what the small parachute above the big one is used for

    It pulls out the main parachute from the pack when you pull the release, and ensures it all comes out cleanly. I think its called a drogue parachute.

    On a tandem system it's called a drogue and is released a few seconds after you exit the plane.
    It's used to slow down the jumpers so that when the main is released, instructer and passenger have a soft opening at a slower pace.

    Solo rigs have pilot chutes which are thrown out. When this is thrown out the relative wind catches it and it pulls the main.
