I did a road trip across America a few years ago and one of our stops was New Orleans....WHAT A KIP! I would'nt go back there for love nor money. It was just a dirty seedy place with a really bad vibe. We arrived there about 10 pm and went out and around Bourbon street, it just seemed so rough and unfriendly and we ended up leaving at 9am the next morning. Since I came back I've heard of Americans saying the same about it and it could be down to the hurricane destroying it but we felt alot of hostility. There was 7 of us and we are all pretty big guys but we felt as if we had to constantly keep looking over our shoulders.

Vegas is alright but for only a couple of days. One of the things I did'nt like about Vegas is that absolutely everybody there is there to try and take money off you at every oppertunity they can find.

I always try and avoid arriving to my destinations at night. It's hard to navigate and leaves you with a bad initial first impression.

Not to mention every city has a darker side at night.

Do some research for gods sake and just stick to Lanzarote in future

TBH i've never gone to a place and think it's depressing or whatnot. I've been to Limerick, which for some reason seems to greyed out a bit on people's lists, I didn't find it bad at all. I arrived in the bus station, walked up a street with some shops. Made a left and there was big, vibrant street with plenty of café's and restaurants, it was lively. The main street is cool, has plenty of shops. I was never to the outskirts so i'm not sure about that.

But if I was to name one place I felt uncomfortable in, it was Salou, which is about a 45 minutes-1 hour drive south east of Barcelona. I went along with my cousin because he wanted a break and Barca were playing at home in the week so I mainly went for that, plus the weather. But at night you'd be having a pint and there'd be 5+ black fellas outside with a complete view of you sitting down drinking. There was no door, the bar had a roof but was in open air. I'm not stereotyping, I was offered cannabis multiple times when walking along the street. I left off my jewellery of most the trip, but if I ever put it on the same type of people would be mad having a look at it. I was very glad I left off my watch and chain when having the pint. I've been to Madrid, Amsterdam, New York, Dublin, but never felt at unease in those places.

I did not feel comfortable at all, I felt on edge whenever out a night. In those other places I mentioned I never felt the need to take my jewellery off. I would not recommend Salou TBH, you'd be better off going to Madrid or the center of Barcelona, it was hard to relax at time when I stayed there.

Are you sure it was Limerick you were in? ;)

The city centre is dead. More boarded up shops and 2 euro stores than ever before. O'Connell St is the dullest and ugliest main street in the country. Don't get me started on the number of tracksuit heads that roam the streets askin for a "spare euro". There are nice areas of Limerick but the city centre certainly isn't one.

    Turkey, worst holiday EVER.

I went with a friend (two girls then) and we got hassled to death. The men were horrific, they literally thought they could put their hands all over you. I lost count of the amount of times I was groped - and even worse, if you got upset or angry they would get abusive. I was called a whore by one guy because I politely told him I didn't want to come into his bar - and then we literally got heckled the length of the street as every other bar owner came out and started hurling abuse at us.

Spent most of the holiday in our hotel because it was the only place we weren't bothered. It was an absolutely miserable week. And the food was rotten.

Hope the sex change helps if you go back.

On topic Kussadasi Turkey is the worst. The people shouting at you to come into their restaurant wasn't so bad the thing that annoyed me was when i was eating the **** food they kept coming over to me talking and annoying when i am trying to eat.

I loved bundoran as child and they had these cool slot machines where there was a drawer than moved in and out and if you could strategically drop the coins at the right time it would push a load of them over the edge, it took 2p coins which were as big as a €2 coin and gave great value, man for me as an obnoxious 13 year old that was the bo shizzle!

Hatfield in Hertfordshire, from what I've seen it's a mish-mash of roads and cars. And you can spend ages looking for the centre of the town.

Harlow in Essex is worse. The outlying residential areas aren't so bad, but the centre of this town is a hopeless jumble of faceless concrete buildings of the 1960s. I do not recommend either of those towns.

Im just back from a week there, went over expecting warm weather, a nice beach, and a couple of bars and restaurants to relax at night, and its exactly what I got, had a great holiday.

Id recommend maybe a city break or something for you in future if your looking for something to do 24/7.

LA is a kip but not as much Hollywood that place outside of the main street the place is just a hole. Homeless people all over the place. I got the bus to LA from the OC (Orange County) and I thought I was heading into a 3rd world country.

Wasnt too found of Las Vegas either, yeah I was glad to see the lights and all that but other then it wasnt for me.

They were "staring" at him, apparently. Seeing as he was concerned to leave his jewellery off, leaving the man bag and leather pants at home as well as closing the shirt up a few more buttons might help with that as well.

It is not a Dubai thing, read the posts here, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia are all the same, It is part of their religion and Islamic men treat women very badly and treat them with no respect only as pieces of meat to be groped.

I don't think I've been to anywhere where I had a really bad experience.

The only two incidents I can think of which I didn't enjoy were:

Staying the night in a place called Sarrebourg in France. It's an absolute dump, nothing to do there. I was only a kid, though, and we were just staying for the night as we drove around Eastern France.

A restaurant in Porto where we could see ants climbing up the wall which our table was right up against and the owner's little Scotch terrier was given free reign to run around the restaurant, including in and out of the kitchen, which we could see from where we were sitting, and being fed by the chef who then used the same hands the dog had licked food off to prepare the meals without washing them first.

100% agree. What pisses me off the most is that the vast majority of women in Arabic countries are really amazing people- extremely polite, warm and hospitable. I went to a women-only hammam in Ramallah and a women's organisation in Nablus, and those ladies were extraordinary to talk to- very intelligent and kind. Pity they're stuck with those pr!cks.

But the OP asked this question:

well if vegas is the worst you have been to my advice is not to go on a holiday anywhere else in the desert southwest of the usa, you will love places like reno, carson city, bakerfield or albuquerque i am sure..... and certainly don't go to atlantic city if you think the transience is bad in vegas, its 10 times worse in atlantic city
Gran Canaria. There's feck all there.

no nothing, outside the amazing sahara like sand-dunes, the great year round weather to enjoy those sunsets on the dunes, palmitos park home to many exotic animals and located in a great setting between the mountains, puerto de mogan with its wonderful setting

When I was about fourteen my family went on a holiday to 'Alicante' but it was actually an obscure town about 45 minutes outside of Alicante. It was just so dodgy with nothing but tacky Irish bars and souvenir shops.

Worst of all it was so full of beggars and shysters trying to sell you stuff all.the.bleedin.time! Even while you were sitting inside a pub or a restaurant they would wander in and harass you at your table. It was so annoying and unnerving.

Yeah, Barcelona is a horrible kip, don't like it at all.

Montreal is very similar to Barcelona in a lot of ways, the old town there is very alike the Ramblas, didn't enjoy that city either

Have been there once (circa 2007) wasn't very impressed at all.. was with a Hen party and the girl who organized it for us forgot to mention that there was only 1 part of the city that catered for 'the likes of us'

No bars for ages and ages then we found this bar, and it was EMPTY barr us.. and they gave us "free shots" they were glorified shots of Mi-Wadi... dirt

I can only imagine what it's like in Turkey because here in London (where a lot of the shopkeepers etc are Turkish), the men are horrible. They stare and leer when I'm on my own and ignore me when I'm with my boyfriend. My BF (who is one of the most easygoing people around) walked out of a restaurant the other day because the waiter wouldn't look at me when I was asking something about the menu and kept answering my boyfriend, who hadn't asked anything and knows nothing about Turkish food. I know the PC brigade won't agree, but I have no interest in visiting the place. They're entitled to have their culture and behave in whatever way they want, but I'm not giving my money to people who can't even manage to show me the tiniest amount of respect by looking at me when I'm talking to them.

And really, I pity people who think it's fine for men in third world countries to harass and degrade women. Walking down the street without being hassled is a basic human right. Anywhere. And smile? SMILE? I can only presume that if this works for you, you're a man.
