    Was walking down Henry street.

Usually there's the 'Concern' crowd there but on this day they had been sent out to collect for Paws, the animal charity.

Anyways, this nice looking girl ran up to me and my friend and asked 'Do you like PUPPIES!!!???' all mock excited and stuff to catch us off guard.

Didn't phase me for a second and without breaking my stride I beamed 'YEAH! THEY'RE DELICIOUS!!" :D:cool:

Poor girl's face dropped and I stolled on like a boss :P

I felt bad later though cos she was purdy... :(

Thats strange paws have not done a street collection in about 4 months

thats true my mistake sorry. I personally think they have a really tough job though. Imagine if I were to set up a thread about ways of dismissing tesco checkout staff and spoke of them as being sub-human

Lol....I'm picturing you as David Attenborough,,in camoflage gear providing running commentary on the behavioru and social structure of the greater spotter chugger......

"and here we see the ambitious male chugger.......performing his intimidation dance on his prey the afternoon shopper.....all in sight of the alpha male chugger.....so that he might gain position in the pack....and earn himself the prime chugging location and maximise the fruits of his labour.....but wait.....whats this.....the male chugger has been beaten to the score by the guile of the female greater breasted chugger.....who snaps up the bewilder shopper before the male chugger could dazzle him with his chugger dance"

    :D

I think you are making a flawed analogy. The Tesco staff are actually helping me go about my business. They are providing me with a necessary service. Its an honourable role to be played. Hell its not exciting, but somebody has got to do it.
On the other hand the chuggers are not helping me in any way. In fact they are doing the exact opposite - sometimes aggressively and confrontationally. You say they have a tough job like they have to do it. They don't. Nobody puts a gun to their head and makes them do it. They could equally choose to go work in Tesco's instead.
They do not provide a necessary service. Nobody needs a chugger to make a charitable donation. In fact it is probably better to make your donations without going thru a chugger as then you won't be paying someones wages out of it.

They could equally decide to be on the dole. They decide to go out and work, it may be the only job they can get surely that is not a bad thing...?
If we all made those donations without chuggers then I doubt the charities would bother bringing in agents

If they are students they can't be on the dole unless they have a couple of years of prsi stamps before becoming a student.
Also - how do you know they aren't on the dole ? Are they all properly declared ?

I got stopped 3 times on the same street for that charity for alcoholics. The guy kept blocking my path and babbling about how they have to teach children to drink responsibly and that's were my money would go. I told him I had none to spare (which I really didn't!) and he just kept blocking me when I tried to walk forward.

Then he started making sexual references about me and I had to turn around and go the long way to where I was going! He was so hard to get away from!

I take the Glare and Stare approach without changing walking speed or direction. It works.

I dont know if they are on the dole or not but the same could be said about any industry. Its would seem a little silly if you were getting the dole to spend 8-12 hours a day working on the busiest streets in Ireland. As far as I can see the are working to pay their way and I dont see a problem with that.
Remember almost half a million people are unemployed in Ireland today and cant find work. People out doing this kind of work are probably not doing it by choice but out of need and I just dont agree with using public forums to slate them.

Society would be better if these people were on the dole rather than harassing the public.

Anyway, there were chuggers all over the streets when we had full employment.

Usually walking down O'Connell Street after work I put on my best "not in the mood, now fcuk off" face, which seems to work.

Did get annoyed with a Barnardos girl who came knocking on our door the other night just as I was trying to put the nipper to bed, told her I didn't want to see anyone from her charity hassling me at my home again.

Worst chugging method I've seen is the cinema trap (haven't seen it here yet, thank God, only in the UK), where the have you as a captive audience before the movie starts. Really winds me up.

I just did a successful trial of a new chugger repellant technique. I have at the moment a nasty cough - very mucusy sounding. Having coughed just prior to passing one chugger I thought to myself 'hmmm what would happen if coughed just when they tried to talk to me'. Seconds later I felt another couhg coming and saw a chugger approaching. So I held onto the cough until they opened there mouth - coughed as loudly and mucusy sounding as I could making sure to cover mouth loosely with my right hand.....the handshake hand if you will.....and low and behold the chugger retreated all of their own accord without me having to say anything!
    EUREKA!!:D

well what happened to me might work!
i was walking through galway and a chugger started walking toward me saying "excuse me could i have a quick word?"
    i said "velocity"

they got what they asked for!

i find it annoying chuggers trying to be sincere about a charity when the motivation for a lot who do it is getting paid ..then trying to block my way and give me guilt trip.

Not quite chuggers but what's the deal with the school kids in groups flogging key rings or badges or whatever? They're all in uniforms so they are obviously allowed off school for the day.

I presume the charity companies go to the school and make a donation for getting free labour for the day. Is that what happens? Equally as annoying as chuggers as you only have to tell 1 chugger to f^%k off and the rest leave you alone. With this lot you pass them numerous times sticking whatever it is they're selling up in your face.

At least they aren't sitting on the dole, just say no thank you and keep walking. If they make you that uncomfortable then you may need to work on your own social skills.

I think its a bit of a shame personally, you dont dare make eyecontact with people on the street now for fear they might chug you.
Even looking remotely happy will earn you scowls and distrust from people who thing you might be a chugger.

Did we used to be more easygoing and open to spontanious conversations with random strangers? It certainly seems to be the 'image/stereotype' the Irish have.

dunno, but legally if you're in a public place then you're allowed take a photo of whatever is in public space. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise :)

    false.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 mcnutt

Also, I find that just before a chugger say's anything
say "do ya have two euro for a pouch of tabacoo?"
boys, most run like hell! But one said "I'm sorry but I only deal with bank account details" to which I stated "I only deal with cash"

    Tried and tested folks!

Either I put my headphones or tilt my head to the side like a dog until they get the hint.

I used to get really pissed off when I was rushing for a bus with a heavy rucksack on my back and they leap in front of me with a big smile on their face until I knocked a Concern guy over because I had too much momentum and I couldn't swerve fast enough. He scowled at me (first time i've seen that smile disappear) and I just smiled a Concern-smile back and ran off to get my bus.

In Dublin I always used to pick up my pace a little and just go, "Sorry, I'm late for work!" And leave it at that. In Germany it's great because I just go in my strongest Irish accent, in English, "Sorry I don't speak German!" (I do though...) and they immediately leave me alone. Works with beggers as well, though I tend to recite the Hail Mary in Irish and they just leave it at that.

I do the EXACT same thing (except the Hail Mary thing). Except replace German for Dutch! It's just so much easier to do it that way, cannot be arsed dealing with them, I really can't!

Usually it's "no thanks" and a nice smile - usually works with the girls.
But if it doesn't it's "I said no thanks politely, please stop", and when that doesn't work - I tell them I'll be complaining to their supervisor or whatever. That tends to work - I don't like being a prick to people...

Normally I just say "No, thank you" and keep walking. The ones that go out of their way to get your attention really bug me though. Like the ones that step forward and block your path, stick out their hand for you to shake and introduce themselves/ask your name. Or the ones that give you a compliment as you pass by (I see a lot of young girls fall for this, I don't like it). Or the REALLY annoying bloke on Henry St. that runs after me telling me I've dropped something when I haven't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

I just say 'already signed up, thanks' and walk on. It annoys me when theyve the whole street covered though and you have to repeat this twenty times just to walk five minutes across town.

I had one stop me outside the Central Bank once and I let her go though her spiel, partly because I was visitng from NI at the time and had no ROI bank account and partly because she was rather attractive.

After 10 mins of listening to her sales pitch she asked for my account details, I said sorry I only have an NI account. So she said "No problem" and whipped out a UK direct debit form. I didn't see that coming.

I learned my lesson and I never stop for them now. I don't even acknowledge their presence.

I chugged for a couple of years about ten years ago in London and it was great fun. Good money, few pints every lunchtime, travel to the seaside regularly etc. and trust me, the London public are a lot harsher critics of chugging than the Irish(we worked occasional weeks in Belfast and Dublin).

And of course we very occasionally got insulted by people. But it was only very rarely. All the keyboard warrior tales on here of telling chuggers to fuck off and the like crack me up. You might get told to f off once a week at most in reality. Most of you just look away or try not to make eye contact. Which is fair enough.

It's been 8 years since i did the job, and looking back I wonder why I did, but it did help to progress my career by moving into management.

Now when I see a chugger I just say "Sorry, not got the time".

i had one stop me at the top of Grafton Street a few years back when I was goin to meet my ex, Asked me did I have a minute to spare for the Dying Children in Africa.

I told her I hate kids and it was probably just nature trimming the weak ones from the herd! The bleedin abuse outta her was unreal. Said nothin to my ex and went for lunch walked back by the girl about an hour later with my ex this time and she hurled more abuse at me and my ex, hahaha was gas watchin two women have a screamin match in the middle of the street.

    Ah to be Irish! :D

I dont mind chuggers at all they're doing a job and they're getting paid for it, if you dont want to stop for them just say no thanks and keep walking, works everytime for me. The posters in here who tell them to "fck off" are spoofers.
