Help for weak wrists

    Hello! I've been doing Pilates for a few weeks now to help strengthen for running, and enjoying it! My only issue is that I can't put my left wrist flat on the floor, or put any weight on it. This means anything on all fours I have to do on my knuckles which is quite sore and I end up focusing on that instead of the exercise.

    I'd love to do yoga too but obviously will have the same issue.

    I use push up handles at home for push ups, but don't think they'll work for yoga/Pilates, has anyone got any suggestions that might help?

    I'd say get yourself to a physio to be honest. My girlfriend had a problem with one of her wrists and she stopped going to pilates because of it. Physio seems to have fixed her and apparently it was a simple problem even though she couldn't put any weight through it before she went (although she still hasn't gone back to pilates:rolleyes:).

    Just take something heavy into your hands and lift it with your wrists only.

    Start with something easy and as you progress increase the weight.
    Don't go with something extremely heavy when you start as this is not good for your bones and stuff.
    Might wanna start with a carton of milk or something for example : Greets.
    This sounds very much like medical advice to me. As per the charter, no medical advice on the forum, please.

    OP, have you mentioned this to your teacher? Doing poses on you knuckles sounds very painful, and I can easily imagine it's very distracting! A good teacher should spot that you're not able to do the poses fully and suggest modifications.
    I'd agree that it would be well worth going to see a physio about it, also. Many physios are also Pilates teachers so they tend to have a good awareness of it

    Just to make it clear, I wasn't looking for medical advice - over the last 6 years, I've been to several doctors and spent about €600+ on physio (one of who was a Pilates instructor, but I wasn't doing pilates at the time) and still haven't found someone who could fix it:mad:! Recently been referred to a specialist, so hopefully they'll be able to help.

    I'll mention it to my instructor the next time, it does get very sore on my knuckles. I've been attempting some cat stretches at home with my palms flat on the floor but wrists at an angle (like not directly under my shoulders so less pressure)- in the hopes that it may help strengthen.

    Hi Captain. An option might be using those foam bricks that are available. You'd have to use two,, one under each palm of the hand when doing the positions that require hands to the ground. I've used them in the past (fell over during the snow period last year and hurt my wrist) and they do reduce the pressure/strain on the wrist. Maybe run it by your instructor before you give them a go.

    It seems I'm finally coming out the other side of my wrist problem :D It's been a painful 8 weeks, but this last week I've done 4 yoga classes with the help of one of these.... I'm hoping to get back to Mysore this weekend, and be wedge free fairly soon.

    In my case it turned out to be a bone problem, my capitate, which took a lot of convincing to go back and stay were it should be... maybe get yours checked out captain p?
