While I wouldn't say Inception is the best overall soundtrack I've ever heard, I can't recall a scene from a film where the visuals and the music just alligned so perfectly as the ending. This three minutes and 43 seconds below do more than make you want to cry or laugh or give your children a hug... it's undefinable.

Obviously, this clip is A MAJOR SPOILER for those who haven't seen the film! But I think it's far better to show the scene itself rather than just the music with the soundtrack cover in the background.

The Star Wars soundtrack is pretty great. Never liked anything Trent Reznor did but the Social Network had some beautiful music. And that tune in Motion is just deadly. And i'm not a fan at all of electronics.

7 pages and no mention of Amelie?!? sacreligious!!!

Best OST by far. Yann Tiersen also did Goodbye Lenin which sounds good. But Amelie is perfect.

Some of the James Bond films have outstanding soundtracks. One that comes to mind straight away is the sci-fi themed Moonraker (1979).

The late John Barry was a genius - so many fantastic film soundtracks are thanks to him.

I'm a bit OST fan! The soundtrack section in a music shop is almost far more worth while than music market based records, you can find some real treats with regards original scores, especially if you're a fan of experimental or Avant Garde music due to film scores being more visual based and harder to interpret concerning timing, genre switches and other bits and pieces like that. Here's my three favourite OST's in no particular order.

John Barry's score to Midnight Cowboy — particularly the main theme.
Bernard Hermann's score to Taxi Driver.
Mike Patton's score to Crank 2.

Honourable mentions to Cape Fear (which is also Bernard Hermann, I believe), Catch Me If You Can, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (David Lynch's films always had great soundtracks), The Omen - "Ave Satani", and Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer.

I had to come back o this thread when I just remembered something; I didn't include Philip Glass' score to Koyaanisqatsi in this! Appalled that it was mentioned! Re-listening to it now, what a magnificent piece of music for a truly great and forward thinking film.
