Fantastic thread, quite addictive, well done to all contributing.

Quick question: Can anyone explain what causes gusts?
I know that wind is air flowing from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure and the bigger the pressure difference the stronger the wind.
But I could never understand what creates gusts?
(Posting in this thread as it is kind of a technical question.)

Can we expect much rain along the East coast tomorrow afternoon/evening, or is it likely to be mostly gusty and dry ?

i think it is the result of air molecules moving at different speed and direction with respect to height. If the atmosphere is unstable, the air will more likely move vertically too at times or what we call mixing. It is this mixing that we get the wind gusts commonly from.

Basically it is the thermal and pressure contrasts between two points and the atmosphere trying to stabilise it, that causes windy and gusty conditions.

sorry. i'm not the best at explaining things.

It has the chance. With the storm currently tracking slightly more southerly than thought yesterday. And yet to undergo rapid intensification, which it may not.

But the closer it comes without doing so increasing the danger that it will just before reaching the northwest coast and be at its peak as it cross just north of the country.

But i reckon 140km/hr gust will be its peak even in that, but still an extreme wind.
