Hi, not sure if this is the right forum to post (there are so many :)). I am looking for some advice on which media player to purchase. Its going to be a Christmas present for my husband and I haven't a clue about these things.

Basically I was looking on pixmania at the following

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/5985045/art/memup/mediadisk-fx-hd-media-pla.html

    a friends husband recommended it.

I also asked my brother who asked his IT guys and they recommended this one

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002E7HEVU/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=computers&psc=1

The one on pixmania looks better to me (for what he would want it for) and also comes with a remote control. It would be used mostly for movies and cartoons for the kids. Has anyone either of the above or can you recommend something else for me. Budget isn't much more than what the memup one would cost.

    Thanks

Bought this one from Amazon recently

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002Q4U9PY/ref=oss_product

Very pleased with it, it doesn't come with an internal hard drive but you can add one, very easy to use and has good online support.

More info on it here (from the manufacturer I think). http://patriot-box-office.wikidot.com/

Good website for info on media players here http://www.avforums.com/forums/streamers-network-media-players/

This will do the job perfectly for you:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Iomega-ScreenPlay-Pro-Multimedia-Drive/dp/B001GT79Q2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1314999827&sr=8-2

For movies, cartoons that's what I use mine for mostly. Comes with a remote control, plugs directly into TV.

Comes in roughly on budget as well.

I've had mine over a year and it's never let me down, will play virtually any file format I throw at it.

The problem with buying an integrated player is that when the disk drive is full you have to buy a whole new unit, you're much better off buying a media player with no internal storage, then buy a cheap 1TB disk drive and plug it in.

Am I missing something, or is the one the IT guys recommended nothing more than an external hard drive?

Maybe they meant the WDTV player - I have this, and it's not bad at all. The only downside is that the model I have isn't WiFi enabled, so I have to transfer files manually from my PC to the harddrive, and then plug the harddrive back into the player. But it's simple to use.

I've heard one of the best ones is called "Popcorn hour", it has WiFi, so you can watch the movies stored on your computer on the TV over the local wifi network.

    Hi,

Good question, there are a lot of media players out there.

The new LookeeTV may be an option. Its not only a media player but an internet tv and radio player. They have new HD models out.

    Walyou just reviewed it http://walyou.com/desktop-tv/
