    Hi.
Just wondering if anyone knows the criteria for social housing. I am separated with 3 kids, one has autism so I can only work part-tme. Had to leave family one just was really bad situation and I could not leave the kids in that situation and I could not afford to run it- huge mansion in the middle of nowhere. Hope someone can give me some info as I am finding it impossible to meet all the expenses with the kids and pay rent- I am above income threshold for any social welfare and only get a very small amount of maintainencefor 1 of my kids(not my husbands child he pays nothing)

Go to your local city or county council housing office (google is you don't know where it is) and ask for an application form, they will tell you if you're eligible.
You can apply to more than one council I think (used to be that way, not sure if still same).

If you own the house you're talking about, you will not qualify for social housing.

House is in joint names but no way I can stay there. I know that sounds strange but ot is across the road from all his family and they intmidated us. I had to go to guards about him I was so afraid of him- he is a nasty alcoholic in possession of a shotgun! He has the house now. Situation so bad that the bank manager told me to walk away and forget about it- my ex is giving them a small payment on the mortgage. But no way can afford the rent for much longer

If you explain the situation, you may have some entitlement. It would be useful to talk to MABS, citizen's information and possible a solicitor.

Separately, it might be useful to talk to the Garda about the shotgun and the drinking.

Also, if you are refused housing from the local authority you may still have some luck from a voluntary housing association. They have a little bit more lee-way with who they can/can't offer housing too.

You should find a list of local voluntary housing providers here.
