Creaky floors

    Moved into a new build 4 years ago and our upstairs floorboards have become very noisy and, in one bedroom, move quite a bit (nothing falling over or gaps between floor and skirting but still movement). The landing is particularly noisy and when someone is walking around upstairs it sounds like there is an elephant trampling around. We currently have carpet in the bedrooms and on the landing but were thinking of getting in wooden (laminate!) floors so in the bathrooms there is no noise (due to the tiles). The only source of creaking in the bathroom is the shower in the en suite - creaks like crazy when someone is taking a shower (there are no leaks or damp in the ceiling underneath, only some minor edge cracking in the paint/plaster - but we have this over quite a bit of the house!)

    If this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

    Sounds to me as if the floor joists were fitted when they were damp. Joints and fixings would become looser as the joists dried out or they could have bowed/warped if there were insufficient noggings (the shorter pieces between joists).
    Alternatively, fixings were not up to spec. or just badly done.

    You will need to get a professional carpenter in to see what can be done.
