Door handles - springs broken

I have six pairs of brass lever types handles of a particular make throughout the house. However, the springs in all twelve handles have broken or disappeared. The only reason the handles aren't hanging limply is because of the springs in the locks themselves. But the weight of the handle pulls the catch in so that the door can't close properly.

Attached is a photo of the innards of one of the handles. The spring is behind the black circular metal 'washer', which looks like it could be prised off with a screwdriver. Unfortunately most of the handles don't even have a spring mechanism inside.

Having checked the Internet I found one UK retailer who is selling this brand of handle for 42.65 sterling a pair. So replacing them would be a costly business. Is it possible to replace the springs and is this a DIY job?

These coil springs are readily available on eBay, or directly from several UK based sources. Just Google 'door handle springs'.

Yes it is a DIY job. Ideally you need a circlip pliers to remove the 'spring clip'. You can use suitable small screwdrivers to lever it off, but it may fly off somewhere if your not careful. ;)
