We were shopping for an eternity ring a few months ago; narrowed it down to two in Dublin city centre - one in Fields in Jervis centre and the other in David Conway jewellers. Both the same price, no sale on.

We ended up buying the one in David Conway but I just checked the other one on Fields website again and it's gone UP in price from €750 to €950!!

So much for retailers trying to attract customers in a recession

is it a gold ring? bare in mind that the price is at this moment just shy of 1900$ an ounce or whatever weight and a few weeks ago it was around 1600.
either way pcs are to macs what copper is to gold. copper is cheaper and more useful

Even with the price of gold going up, the shop would have paid for this at the old price.

If a shop is sitting on the same stock for a few months, then that shop is not doing well. A good retailer will "turn" its stock 5-6 times a year. - that's about 8-10 weeks for average stock to be on the shelf before selling.

If the item is quite plain in design, then the gold price / platinum price hike over the past 12 months will play a big part. If the gold content is low and there are diamonds in it, the price won't have risen as much as diamond prices have stayed relatively stable.

yes it is a diamond eternity ring so maybe the gold price hike shouldn't have caused the price to go up by that much

Shop around a little more - try some smaller independents that don't have huge costs. Lance grossman on dundrum hill is one example. Across from dundrum centre

Of course, but its a business not a charity.

The shop have to increase the price to the current market value otherwise they wouldn't be able to buy more at the current price.

Similarly if the price of gold went down then the price of the ring goes down.

Jewelery is all very subjective anyway, end of the day your paying for the design, branding and so on.

Hey, you could just buy a lump of gold and a diamond, but you cant really wear that.

The price of gold has gone up enormously and is continuing to rise!

Some shops are melting their old jewellery down and selling it off, since they make more money with less hassle.

It's like fuel, they charge you the replacement cost not the bought price.

We got our wedding rings in H Samuel in Belfast a few years ago and collected them in Dublin(they had to be ordered in by Belfast and sent down)

When we looked at the same rings in HS Dublin they were about €300 dearer.

whether Belfast of dublin or london, HSamuel are WAY WAY over priced. - they pay collossal rents to be on corner sites and this in turn is paid for by you.
