Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

assuming your talking winter barley... is it not a bit late to spraying off ground?
    have you seed sorted?

kinda think your a bit late for barley
wheat might be a bit more forgiving

Not too late for winter barley, there is easily a month left for sowing yet, if any thing it's too early.

OP, I'd be getting a soil test done on the field and that will tell you if you need fert or at least how much, and when it needs to be spread, if the field is hungry the back end is best (but the cut off date is sept 15th) if not spring is grand.

As for costs, the Teagasc costs and returns will give you an idea of what to budget for, you should be able to beat those prices easily enough though that depends on what your circumstances are.

Definitely not late for winter barley.

how long do you allow for burning off? then ploughing then tilling then planting?
all that could take more than a month to sort out.
it is doable but you'd want to get the finger out and make sure that your contractor can accommodate you. as you may be last in line now etc.

sounds like virgin ground so allow for stone picking too:D

if going ahead i would be of the opinion that the likes of the round up gold would be worth the extra few pound so you can get ploughing sooner

getting planted before the soil temps drop to much will have a big influence on emergence and subsequent yield.

go for it if your keen but do be aware of the pit falls.

having planted wheat too late before i learned the hard way.

is barley not a bit more fickle when it comes to ph... 6.5?

The OP hasn't said what sort of ground he's thinking of sowing, ley or stubble.

One way or the other burning off wouldn't take much more than a fortnight, the grass/weeds don't have to be totally gone just turning yellow.

If it is ley ground, especially if its fertile lay ground you'd have to be careful about going too early, crop could get very advanced.

10 acres wouldn't take too long to do, if it was us we'd plough and press it in the morning and sow and roll in the afternoon.

No most fellas round here are just ploughing then 1 pass if the conditions are right. Only on certain occasions would you need to give it a run of a harrow before the 1 pass
