On live 95fm, parkway valley has been given the go ahead. :)

Should bring some construction jobs + retail jobs. Hopefully it will add money to limerick economy.

Good news, finally some competition for the Cresent and before any one get in about 'the death of the city centre', too late died along time ago.

Just what the city needs, more empty cement and glass units. Queue another round of M&S rumours.

As if the shopping centre with superquinn, jetland, coonagh, (most of which are generally empty) and all the retail parks were not competition enough...

If they're going to go ahead and build this thing what are they going to put in it?

Iceland were one of the companies originally mentioned as one of the two (possibly three) anchor stores.

Competition for the Crescent? The Crescent is struggling as it is and it's well known that 2 or 3 of its big name tenants are in trouble and may not even exist this time next year. One is as good as gone already. We will now have Parkway Valley and the Opera, two pretty major developments. Does anybody seriously think that Limerick needs this? The issue isn't the Crescent, it's that only one of the Parkway or Opera is needed, not both. Can't see this working out to be honest. Competition will be rife, but what retailers are going to fill all of these units? Can't see where they're going to come from!

The mayor was on the radio this morning and was critical of it getting the greenlight.

He was quite mouthy about how it "should not, and must not go ahead", and made what seemed like a veiled threat about how it would need extra/new planning permission to be approved to go ahead.

Shame the mayor does not seem as proactive in seeing all the empty units in the city centre or the big joke that is the Opera centre, and shame that he is not coming out and telling us the great and definite plans for that Opera centre.

The way I see it is if he is willing to come out so strongly about the Parkway Valley project, then he should have something to counter it with for the city centre other than the usual pie in the sky remarks about how the Opera centre (with no developer, no plan, no tenants) will be great or how there are loads and loads of companies looking to set up in the city centre. Maybe of we actually saw some of these mythical companies actually opening in the city centre then what he says about other projects would carry some weight.

But he might as well run down the Parkway Valley project, it's not as though Limerick needs new jobs, and I guess the city council will need something to try and blame for the city centre being the way it is, and what better to blame that a project that is not even up and running.

Im really scratching my head as to how this got the go ahead. I understood it was accepted by local authorities that they had made a balls of retail life in the city centre by granting permission for vast retail space all around suburban Limerick. I thought the opera centre was meant to be an attempt to regenerate retail life in Limerick City Centre. Limerick CC coyld justify the development of a proper centre. Arthurs Quay is wretched. Jesus the planning authorities have learned nothing havd they?

Well lads in fairness, Ya the city centre is dying but being quite honest the only ones to blame are city hall. How can you expect any average individual to go into the city centre when you have so much more in the likes of the Crescent?

On Street Parking in the city is a joke, not to mention traffic. Whatever idiot came up with the idea of the city orbital route ought to be taken out and punched in the liathroidi with a bowling ball. When the entire route is complete, traffic will have to drive the whole way up William St, and down Roches St just to get up by the chicken hut. Fair enough William St looks good but whats the point in just having a city looking good when any big retailer is refusing to open up shop here? There is no ease of access. You can go to a retail park or shopping centre park your car for free, do your bits, have a bite to eat etc and you know youre not rushing back before Robocop throws a ticket on your car for being 30 seconds over your time.

Rates on retail units - Talk about ridiculous. No wonder businesses are shutting up shop every day. I just noticed today Joe O Meara office supplies retail unit is up to let, yet another well established business been forced to close by the look of it. Drop the rates because I can guarantee it will see an increase in the number of businesses willing to open a base in Limerick. The council say right now that if they drop the rates, they'll lose out on money. Yet how much are they losing out on now with the number of vacant units?Yes the council will lose a few pennies by lowering rates but if they can fill the vacant units they'll pick up pounds instead of pennies. It makes economic sense.

And lads for gods sake give M&S what they want. Agree to their terms with rent as was published in today's Limerick Leader. M&S want 5 years free rent and a nomimal fee thereafter. What has the mayor said? He wants them to be "welcomed with open arms". Good on ya Mayor Long. You can see clearly :D
