    Hi guys
I am interested in getting myself a German Shepard late next year. I have grown up with dogs but the training didnt go beyond sit, fetch and potty training.

I know these dogs need plenty of trainging from an early age so im trying to get as much info as possible so im well prepared to train it and be a responsible owner considering the all to common and unjustified bad reputation they have. I would greatly appreciate any info i can get. Any books, website etc you know of that are good?? and any info on
    • Training techniques
    • How best to socialise the pup
    • Nutrition
I know its the training from day one that has the greatest effect on the dog once its matured and would greatly appreciate any info or even a nudge in the right direction

    Thanks

Hi OP - I went to Dog Training Ireland in Dublin to help me train my dogs.
Weirdest thing though - I grew up with dogs and it was only through going to their sessions that I learnt what a load of cobblers I thought I knew.

Not sure where you are but look around your area for similar trainers. Maybe talk to some people who have used them or even ask if you can sit in on one session before you attend just for five minutes to get a feel.
Would suggest that you stay well away from those individuals that offer to take your dog away for a week for intensive training...

We have just done obediance training but there is also agility training - have to admit that the dogs I see running that course look like they are having a fabulous time. Currently we have introduced clickers - and are slowly starting to see results.

All the best and I hope your plans for next year work out. (Don't forget the pet insurance ;) )

    hi colmdel
Best to go to obedience classes. Theres a lot to learn from books, websites etc but how to apply the techniques correctly and recognise mistakes in my view takes an experienced trainer. The dog would also be getting socialised during the class. Trainers are a wealth of information on other aspects like any problems with feeding, barking, agressiveness etc. After all most have dealt with and seen any kind of issues with the various breeds. Two good books i found very usefull are

Training The German Shepherd Dog by John Cree. Theres loads on either eBay or Amazon and cheap.

The Dogs Mind by Bruce Fogle. An excellent book on understanding your dog and whats behind what they do and why. Great sections on specific behaviour issues.
Best of luck with the GSD. Great choice.
